Alex on Alice

So, you guys met at the Christmas Market, how was it?
What will be the fate of this match made in Bridgemas?Johana Trejtnar for Varsity

Well, it was quite dark and wet but she was very friendly! We just jumped right into the basics.

Hope that didn’t rain on your parade… how would you describe her?

Passionate. Easygoing. Funny.

Do you think she’d say the same about you?

Maybe she’d say that I was a bit shy.

Where did you go first?

We got some churros! Then we watched all the people ice skating fall over.

Oof. And how was the conversation?

We talked about hobbies and courses. It was really interesting to hear about maths.

In general, do you think you guys had much to talk about?

I think the STEM background gave us some commonalities, our senses of humour matched quite well too.

“Maybe I took the fun out of it”

Any particularly memorable moments?

In the maze, we had to fill in blanks to spell a phrase – spoiler alert – I immediately guessed it was “Jingle Bells”. Then, as we went on, it became more and more clear that I was right. We kept competing with possible alternatives, though, I guess, as STEM students we can’t help it!

So, you were able to impress her right away?

I don’t know… maybe I took the fun out of it.

Did you guys have good chemistry?

Maybe. I think I’d develop romance more from a friendship – I’d be more than happy to see if we can develop that first!

“Our whole interaction was quite friendly”

So, you’d see her again?

We might play table tennis at some point – we both used to play.

Who brought that up?

There was some contribution from us both.

And you’ll see where things go from there?

I guess.

So, it’s not a definite no?

I mean, I can only speak for myself…

Do you think she’s on the same page?

I think our whole interaction was quite friendly.

How did you leave things then?

We exchanged Instagrams and reiterated that we’d play table tennis.

Have you been in touch since?

I messaged saying it was nice to meet her, that I hoped she’d gotten into college alright — she’d lost her Camcard — and to let me know when she wants to play a game!

So, the ball’s in her court now?

Well, she said she has the connections to find us a table…

What would you rate the night from one to ten?

An eight?

Alice on Alex

So, I’m sorry about the rain… how were the christmassy vibes?

It was a nice place! We did the Christmas Tree maze but I fear it wasn’t aimed at two Cambridge students in terms of the intellectual challenge… so, we smashed it!

Any standout moments?

We watched some guy fall over on the ice and get absolutely soaked. He did a hockey stop and it threw up a massive wave of water all over himself and the people behind him!

Damn. So, you guys preferred to just chat from a safe distance?

Well, I can’t ice skate to save my life and neither can she.

“She wasn’t like ‘I love Nigel Farage! ’ but still”

How was the conversation?

A bit slow at first but the more we chatted, we realised things we had in common. There was enough to talk about throughout the night!

So, there was conversational chemistry… How about match-wise?

It was okay, I think she’s a lot more locked in than me, I like doing things that aren’t my degree. We had things in common but I don’t think we were that compatible.

Any other moments that led to that conclusion?

Well, I’m interested in politics and she didn’t know what Reform UK was! She wasn’t like “I love Nigel Farage!” but still… that was a moment where I figured we weren’t quite suited.

Any particularly good qualities about her?

A good sense of humour, there was quite a lot of laughter! I think we’re going to play table tennis at some point.

Are those solid plans?

I think so! Next term when we’re both free.

Do you think you would’ve hit it off if you’d met her in the wild?

I don’t think so – I’m glad we did it tho!

Do you think she’s in agreement?

It didn’t feel too romantic so I hope so! I hope that doesn’t sound too mean.

What were your parting words?

Blind Date: ‘I don’t think I checked my watch once’

I said I had to go back to do an example sheet.

Fun post-date activity!

I know… then she wished me good luck and walked me back.

So, what would you rate the date on a scale from one to ten?

A six? Because there wasn’t much of a romantic connection.
