Blind Date: ‘I should’ve changed my socks’
In unideal weather conditions, fourth year Carly and PhD student Felix meet at the Maypole
So, you met at the Maypole, how did you kick off the date?
Carly: After we found each other, we went immediately to the bar, and Felix ordered an Estrella. The thing is, he said it so beautifully – because of his Spanish accent, that I was like, “oh wow, you said that in such a lovely way!” and he replied: “yeah… it’s almost as if I’m Spanish.” I was just trying to compliment him!
Ooh, a little bit awkward then.
Carly: A bit. Then I ordered a cider, so the bartender asks how we’d like to pay. I go silent, because, you know, it’s his decision, and Felix says “let’s split it”. Fair enough. I don’t think it was the best start, but I just decided to see how it would go from there.
What did you first think of Carly?
Felix: I don’t think that much, in general. But she seemed very put-together.
“You know when you make a joke and it’s just… crickets”
Do you reckon you made a similar impression?
Felix: Probably not! Relative to the whole date, I don’t think I made a good first impression, but that was because it ended much better than it began. Conversation started out a bit formal. You know when you make a joke and it’s just… crickets.
Yeah. Sounds like it improved from there though?
Felix: It was pretty bad weather, so we moved towards a heater and ordered some food, and then the conversation went into more personal topics, like our dating lives, why we signed up, and I finally made her laugh!
Carly: He has a very interesting personality, and he’s quite flamboyant, so I was never bored! While we were sharing the pizza, he introduced the topic of dating histories.
That’s bold!
Carly: He asked me if I’d dated as an undergraduate. I said yes, you know, naturally, but he was very surprised. He said “Oh, I’m so glad I never dated anyone as an undergrad because I didn’t have to put up with their bullshit!” So he was definitely an honest person, which was actually a big plus, and he was really funny as well. I didn’t fake-laugh at any jokes.
“There was a bit of a wardrobe malfunction”
Did you feel a spark?
Felix: As the date progressed, there started to be some more flirting – she held my hands over the table, that sort of thing. I’m typically not very alert, but I picked up on the vibe, and she definitely knew how to flirt, so we carried on like that, and I was paying her compliments. Then, there was a bit of a wardrobe malfunction.
Oh?
Fabio: Basically, I was wearing very thin socks. My legs were freezing; I started shivering, and my teeth were chattering. I could almost hear my mother say “Come on Felix, you should’ve checked the weather!” When we were walking back, I was so cold that I had to take a deep breath before talking.
How did the date end?
Carly: As we walked back, we were holding hands, and we kissed as well, and that was nice. We exchanged phone numbers too, so we might be going on a second date.
Do you think you had much in common?
Felix: There were no major red flags, in terms of dating, but we didn’t really share any hobbies or career goals.
Carly: We didn’t have much in common apart from both signing up for a blind date.
So, how would you rate it out of ten?
Carly: As a first date, probably a six and a half or seven.
Felix: A nine, because I’m saving the extra one for our next date.
Your next date will be a one out of ten then?
Felix: No! You know what I mean.
Since their date, Carly and Felix have faced some obstacles, but their connection remains strong. A second date was postponed due to illness and is still in the works. Hopefully, the bad weather didn’t affect their plans too much!
