Blind Date: ‘I don’t think I checked my watch once’
Exchange student, Margot, meets economics student, Charlie.
Margot on Charlie
So, you met at The Granta, what were your first impressions of him?
I thought he was cute!
Well, that’s a good start.
Yeah, and I felt relieved because he looked a bit flustered, and so was I.
“There wasn’t a single awkward moment throughout the whole evening”
Was it awkward at all when you started talking?
There wasn’t a single awkward moment throughout the whole evening.
That’s rare!
I think i’m just a very chatty person and he appreciated that – it was very natural.
Was he on your level conversationally?
It was very reciprocated. He asked a lot of questions, which I really appreciate.
Good questions?
Yeah, we didn’t spend much time on the basics. And then we just started talking absolute nonsense in the best way possible.
Did you guys have a lot in common?
I wouldn’t say we really matched on specific hobbies – but not in a bad way! I think we have the same way of thinking about deeper topics.
How would you describe him?
Funny – really, really funny – charming, smart and a great conversation partner.
Your friends told me you “shine in every room” – a glowing description – do you think he matches up?
I think if you humanised that description then yeah, I’d say he lives up to it.
Was there a moment from the night that’s stayed in your head?
There were some really good moments. I told him a recent embarrassing story I hadn’t told anyone, and we laughed about it for a good 30 minutes – it became a running joke throughout the evening.
Those sound like great vibes.
Yeah, I mean it was quite a long date – we met at 7pm and left at almost midnight!
Did it feel long?
No, not at all.
And do you think the night came to a natural end?
Well, the pub was just closing. But I think that was a good thing, there’s only so long you can talk on a first date.
Well, you want the night to end on a high!
Definitely.
On that note… did you kiss?
No…
I had to ask! I get the sense you’d like to see him again though?
Yeah, he asked me out again at the end of the date!
“he asked me out again at the end of the date”
And you said yes?
Yes.
Exciting! Did he seem nervous?
I think he was overthinking it a bit – we’d already parted ways when he shouted “Wait!” and asked.
Quite a romantic moment, have you guys been in contact since?
Not really so far, he asked if I got home safe though.
Sounds like it exceeded any expectations?
It was a great date!
So on a scale from one to ten it would be…
an 8.7!
Charlie on Margot
So I hear the date went well… How was it going in?
Well, I knew it was her immediately, what you said about her being “sparkly” was a good indicator.
Initial thoughts?
I was pleased she turned up.
Did you guys get into a rhythm right away?
It was pretty painless. It flowed naturally and I enjoyed myself.
Was there a lot for you to talk about?
We covered quite a lot of ground, yeah. They had to come and tell us to leave.
“I don’t think I checked my watch once throughout the evening”
So, the time flew?
I don’t think I checked my watch once throughout the evening.
What did you think about her in general?
Very, very open. Quite talkative, quite funny, and a little bit eccentric – in a good way.
Safe to say you weren’t disappointed with the match then?
Definitely not, I was glad she didn’t go in wanting to save face.
Did you also go in ready to lay it all out on the field?
“All out” is maybe a stretch, but in for a penny in for a pound, you know?
Were there any particularly memorable moments?
Getting shooed out was kind of a forced ending – but that’s a sign that it was going well!
I mean I did hear that you asked her out again…
I floated the idea.
By asking her that exact question?
Possibly… I didn’t realise I’d already been dobbed in. Okay, yes I did.
Do you intend to reach out again?
We’ve definitely got more to talk about.
So, if you had to, what would you rate the night from one to ten?
Eight maybe? It was very cold.
But not cold enough to make you leave, clearly.
I was quite happy to shiver.
We followed up with Margot and Charlie and they’ve gone on a second date – with more in the works! A win for Blind Date.
