News in Brief: driverless buses, evolution and pollution
A lighthearted round-up of news stories from Cambridge, including bright green rivers and bright orange trailers
Self-driving buses could take the wheel in Cambridge
A pilot scheme led by Greater Cambridge Partnership aims to explore the potential for self-driving bus technology in the city. Whippet has been announced as the operator for the Connector autonomous bus trial. The Chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Executive Board, Cllr Elisa Meschini, said: “Autonomous vehicle technology has the potential to transform the way people travel in and around Cambridge.”
The evolution of evolutionary studies
Researchers from the University of Cambridge have conducted a genetic study that highlights a hidden chapter in human evolution. Using advanced analysis based on full genome sequences, the researchers uncovered evidence that modern humans evolved from a genetic mixing event between two ancient populations that diverged around 1.5 million years ago. This complicates the traditional story that Homo sapiens appeared in Africa around 200,000-300,000 years ago and descended from a single lineage.
Bright green water spotted in Cambridge brook
Bright green water has been sighted in a Cambridge waterway. A stretch of Coldham’s Brook along the Chisholm Trail became vivid green on Thursday (13/03). The Chisholm Trail is a popular but unfinished walking and cycling route in the city. Following this, the Environment Agency has encouraged the public to report any signs of pollution.
Stolen Cambridge food truck found in London
A bright orange food truck that went missing from Cherry Hinton on 21 February has been found over 50 miles away in east London. The trailer was kitted out for owner Aman Kaur’s new business venture – selling loaded fries, waffles, and desserts. She purchased the trailer in November last year, spending a total of £30,000, including buying equipment. At the time of the theft, she told the BBC: “We were going to start trading this weekend – and now it’s gone.” Cambridge Police have said that their investigation into the theft is ongoing.
