Dr Geoffrey Webber has resigned as Fellow, Precentor, and Director of Studies in Music at Gonville & Caius College following inappropriate behaviour toward a student of the College.
Caius’s undergraduate students were made aware of Dr Webber’s resignation early Saturday evening in an email from College Master Dr Pippa Rogerson.
The email noted that ‘the College has been supporting the student concerned, and the interests and wishes of that person are paramount in the College’s action.’
The message also encouraged ‘any member of College who has been affected’ to contact their Tutor or Director of Studies, the Dean or the College Nurse.
In a statement to Varsity, Dr Rogerson stated that “inappropriate behaviour has no place in Gonville & Caius College. It falls short of our College values, in particular maintaining a safe, welcoming, inclusive and diverse community here.”
Dr Webber, who was an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Music, was appointed to his position in Caius in 1989, according to his profile on the Faculty of Music’s website which had been taken down by the time of writing. He was a high-profile figure in choral performance as director of The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, whose public performances under Webber have included radio broadcasts for the BBC.
Dr Webber has been contacted for comment.
