Easter's first blind date ends... interestinglyRyan Teh for Varsity

So, you met at the Free Press, what were your first impressions?

Will: Well, we couldn’t find them at first.

Benjy: Yeah, I don’t think we started off particularly well, because we just walked in and got ourselves a drink, and it was only then that we saw the girls. So they had to go and get themselves a drink and me and Will were just lurking behind them.

Erica: As we were walking up to the Free Press we saw these two boys going up the road, and we immediately realised it was them, but when we got there they’d already gone in. So we just waited outside and then decided to pretend that we didn’t know who they were. It would’ve been too awkward to go and interrupt them if they weren’t actually there for the double date.

A little awkward then, how did the conversation go from there?

Benjy: After we had sat down, and got your basic fresher’s chats – college, names, subjects – out of the way, the conversation got better remarkably quickly.

Daisy: We weren’t going into the date too seriously, so it was good that the vibe was matched, because we were all quite lighthearted about it.

“I said Sally from Cars, or that girl from The Lego Movie”

Erica: They were really funny, so we started teasing them a bit, and we got the sense pretty quickly that they were also up for a laugh.

Will: Me and Daisy started out with a more surface-level conversation; like family, what you do outside of college, stuff like that. But Benjy’s chat was slightly… different.

Benjy: One of the first things me and Erica started talking about was our controversial celebrity crushes.

Which were…?

Benjy: Unfortunately I can’t leak who hers was, but it was a good way to get everybody laughing.

What about yours? Or is that too embarrassing?

Benjy: I said Sally from Cars, or that girl from The Lego Movie.

Will: Which you last watched, what, a month ago?

“I basically said: if one of them has blue eyes I get dibs”

It sounds like you naturally gravitated to separate conversations then. How did the double date dynamic work?

Will: We sat down first and made sure we were opposite each other, so the girls could choose who they sat next to, so we did sort of split off. But we’d have group conversations in between, so there was a nice balance.

Erica: Before we went on the date, I basically said: if one of them has blue eyes I get dibs, but it turned out that they both had blue eyes! I think Benjy was a bit chattier, making more jokes and stuff.

Daisy: Yeah, Will was a bit more quiet, but very sweet.

So, you went for half-and-half?

Erica: Well, we ended up going to Spoons, and I think by the time we were there we were just having a silly group conversation, and at that point it felt like we were all just friends hanging out.

Will: I think it was quite obvious that the dates weren’t going to go anywhere by the end, but we had a lot of fun.

How did you end the night?

Erica: They chased us across Parker’s Piece.

Oh.

Erica: On the way to Spoons, Daisy and I were walking in front of them, and I heard Benjy go “what if we just chased them right now?” I turned around and said, “do it”, so we just legged it.

Daisy: It was definitely a bonding moment.

“Benjy messaged me asking if I could get Daisy to meet Will by the bins”

An exhilarating end! Have you seen each other since?

Benjy: We exchanged instagrams, and said we’d see each other on Jesus Green at the weekend, so during C-Sunday I sent Erica a message asking if Daisy could meet up with Will.

Erica: Yeah, Benjy messaged me asking if I could get Daisy to meet Will by the bins.

How romantic.

Erica: I said I would, but I was drunk and forgot, but he ended up bumping into me much later.

Will: Benjy was quite drunk.

Benjy: I’m not 100% sure what was said.

“I still did my best to embarrass him at every opportunity”

Would you see each other again, as friends or otherwise?

Will: Well, my thing with Daisy was very obviously not going to go anywhere, because the chat was very surface-level, but it was still fun and she was really nice at the end of the day.

Benjy: From knowing Will, he’s just quick to stop things, and from where I was sitting it seemed like it was going well. But that was one of the reasons why we decided to do the double date together, so we could be each other’s wingmen. I still did my best to embarrass him at every opportunity.

Will: And vice versa. But anyway, in a friends scenario, I’d see them again.

Benjy: Yeah, I don’t think there was anything that romantic going on, but they’re really nice girls.

Erica: I wouldn’t go out of my way, but I definitely had fun.

Daisy: I’m not rushing to go out again, but maybe. He was really sweet. If we bumped into them, I’d stand around and chat with them for a while.

Lastly, how would you rate it out of ten?

Erica: Maybe a seven?

Daisy: Yeah, seven probably.

Benjy: See, we’ve read all the previous articles, and there seems to be quite a trend of the guys going ”that date was amazing!"

And the girls saying… ”yeah, I hated it.”

Benjy: Exactly, so if they gave us a three, and we gave them an eight…

I’ll change the answer accordingly, don’t worry.

Will: I’d say a seven or eight though.

Benjy: Yeah, that sounds about right.
