Big wins for Catz and Trinity-Christs in rugby Cuppers
The first round saw some intense clashes
Cambridge students were treated to the first round of rugby Cuppers last Saturday, including nail-biting wins for Pirton and Robinson.
Last year's competition was won by St John's, after a 45-5 win over Fitz-Sidney in the final.
In the first game of this year's tournament, Pirton won 19-14 over Churchill. All three Pirton tries were scored by Oyare Aneju, who was undeterred by a controversial yellow card for his captain.
Despite fighting valiantly, Clare-Corpus-King's (CCK), top of Division Two, lost 24-5 to Trinity-Christs. According to CCK's Instagram admin, Teddy Pearson’s try, the only for CCK, was the best of the match. Five metres out, Teddy "used his immense power to crash over the line".
Meanwhile, Peterhouse-Emma-Selwyn-Tit Hall (PEST) lost 14-12 to Queens'.
First division Robinson won a dramatic kicking competition against second division Caius after the game finished 7-7 after normal time. Caius return to fighting for promotion against CCK and PEST.
St Catherine's, second in Division One and one of the favourites for Cuppers, faced no such difficulty in their match against Downing, destroying them 38-7. Downing now face a league campaign in which they are fighting for survival in the top tier.
Jesus vs All Grey’s (a team made up of mature and graduate colleges) was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The second round of Cuppers kicks off in February, after the remaining fixtures have been played.
