Vice-Chancellor speaks about the importance of university research
Sir Leszek Borysiewicz spoke about the global role universities have at a business club meeting.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Sir Leszek Borysiewicz , spoke of the importance of the role of universities in both research and innovation in business.
Speaking in a meeting for the Cardiff Business Club, Sir Leszek said that it was necessary for universities to contribute to society, and innovation was a key factor in their contribution.
Those in attendance at the event, sponsored by Cardiff Metropolitan University, heard how, “In the world of globalisation, universities are now regarded as crucial national assets”.
He added that it is important that, “Academics must have the time, resources and infrastructure to develop their own interests and to attract others to forge strong teams. It is individual researches who, through their curiosity and commitment, foster the spirit of discovery.”
At a time when cuts are affecting both universities and businesses, and faculties at the university are having to adapt to increasing financial constraints, Sir Leszek said how greater integration is needed with universities in order to maximise the benefit academic research can have: “If research projects are to have a life beyond the individual enthusiasm of an academic, they need to be rooted more firmly in the institution.”
Drawing from his own experiences, he spoke about the sort of issues that require both international and academic collaboration: “My experience as a research funder, as well as now vice chancellor, suggests climate change as an example of a multi-faceted problem requiring engagement across disciplines.”
