Applications to join Varsity’s social media team are now open.

This is your chance to help shape Varsity’s social media output, shaping how Cambridge’s biggest stories reach our broad audience.

Varsity is the oldest and only independent student newspaper in Cambridge, and one of only three in the UK. We hold institutions to account, representing the interests of students with integrity, ambition, and a creative edge.

Our social media team plays a key role in bringing our reporting to life. From promoting breaking news and investigations to creating engaging content around fashion, music, and theatre, you’ll help define Varsity’s digital presence and connect our reporting with audiences in Cambridge and beyond.

Whether you’re interested in video production, content creation, or managing our social media output, there is a place for you at Varsity. You’ll gain hands-on experience, develop valuable media skills, and contribute to one of Cambridge’s most influential student institutions.

The Editors-in-Chief of Varsity in Michaelmas term will be Daisy Bates (db974) and Bibi Boyce (blbb2). Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the application process or what it’s like to contribute to the paper.

How to apply

All applications for our social media team must include:

  • Your full name, subject, year, and college
  • The role(s) for which you would like to apply
  • Any other extracurricular commitments in Michaelmas term
  • A critique of our current social media presence (300 words max)
  • Any experience you have for the role (300 words max)
  • Three ideas for Instagram posts or short-form video content (200 words max)

Social Media Manager

Varsity’s social media manager will play a crucial role in defining our social media strategy over the long vacation and Michaelmas term. This will include managing a small team of videographers to ensure consistent publication of short-form video content, while working with leadership to curate a compelling and exciting grid for Varsity’s Instagram. The social media manager will need to be confident and creative, with a strong vision for Varsity’s social media output, and familiarity with Instagram and Facebook’s algorithms. Your application should include:

– An outline of how you would ensure consistent social media coverage of Varsity reporting, particularly over the long vacation (300 words max)

– An explanation of how you’d effectively manage a small team of videographers (300 words max)

Videographer

This role, new for Michaelmas term, will see in a new era for Varsity’s social media presence, producing regular short-form media content to accompany our reporting and encourage engagement. Strong applicants will be familiar with video production software, with a working understanding of Varsity’s audience and how to appeal to them. They will approach the role with creativity and a keen eye for detail, boosting Varsity’s reach with inventive video content, planning shoots and editing the content for upload.

Your application should include any relevant photography/videography experience, alongside a small portfolio with links to up to three examples of short-form video content you’ve produced, if relevant.

We are looking to appoint two videographers.
