The Pink Week Ball in full swingCharlie Griggs

The Pink Week Ball 2023 has been cancelled by organisers, who cited the ongoing cost-of-living crisis as the reason the event wouldn’t be going ahead.

They were promised the “night of [their] dreams” at this year’s Pink Week Ball - but ticket holders were left disappointed earlier this week (30/1) as organisers announced the cancellation of the event on social media. The event was due to be a central part of Pink Week 2023, a week of events aimed at raising money and awareness for breast cancer charities.

In a statement released on social media, the organisers apologised to everyone who had bought tickets, saying they were “upset and heartbroken” about the cancellation. In the statement, organisers stated that with the ongoing cost-of living crisis, they “do not believe [they] would be able to put on the ball” whilst also “raising money for charities”. This comes as concerns are raised about support for students amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Organisers of the Pink Week Ball  promised a “smaller scale event towards the end of term”, and told those who had purchased tickets to “keep an eye out” for an update on ticket refunds in the coming days.

Is Cambridge doing enough to help us cope with the cost-of-living crisis?

One second year student who attended the event in 2022 told Varsity that last year’s ball was “really fun”. They said that while they weren’t planning on attending this year, “it’s a shame for breast cancer charities, as Pink Week managed to raise a lot last time through the ball.”

Last year, Pink Week raised over £40,000 for important breast cancer charities around the country. This year's ball was promised to be “bigger and better than ever”.

Tickets for the Pink Week Ball, which went on sale on January 15th, cost £97.94 each.

The Pink Week Committee has been approached for comment.
