Varsity has seen a video from March last year of Matt Alderton, who is currently running for election as Cambridge Student Union President, calling a current sabbatical officer a “f*cking c**t”.

He then proceeds in the video to claim that the aforementioned sabbatical officer, and a candidate running for one of this year’s sabbatical roles both “always had a go at [him] for being a f*cking righty.”

He concludes the video by saying “I f*cking hate you both. The whole Irish Republic hates you both.”

In the video, Alderton is visibly drunk, holding a pint and addressing the camera. Slurring his words, he jokes about supporting the Irish Republican Army (IRA). This is seemingly a joke, and mockery of the two individuals in question.

When asked about the video, Alderton responded, “I firmly condemn all forms of terrorism.”

During the investigation of the video, Varsity was also contacted by two of the area managers who worked under Alderton at Magdalene May Ball in 2019, and a third also provided a statement. Alderton was the committee member responsible for Staff and Security, in charge of ensuring the area managers had means to communicate with security and committee members.

The area managers were in charge of several sections of the May Ball, and managed the court supervisors and general workers in their sections.

The area manager said that - for a large portion of the evening - Alderton was “absolutely smashed” and “not speaking in proper sentences”. This was confirmed by a second area manager, who recalled Alderton “climbing out of the Cam onto a punt to be greeted by a bottle of champagne, at the moment he was supposed to be signing workers out.”

They said this left “a lot of tired workers very confused and area managers trying to make an ad-hoc register after the shift had officially ended”. This was corroborated by a third area worker, who said he was “jumping off into the river Cam during a committee photo.”

Two area managers reported being left without a working radio on the night. One described being left feeling “hopeless, out of control, and in a very uncomfortable position” when a guest and a general worker - rather than qualified security personnel - had to intervene when a situation got heated with a guest who became physically aggressive with them when told they could not jump the queue for the silent disco.

Another area manager who spoke to Varsity also said they “ended up spending a while trying to charge up a radio before deciding that [they’d] be better off without one.”

A third area manager who did have a radio said that “the few times [Alderton] came through on the radio, he was shouting at us, being quite aggressive and visibly drunk.”

They continued, “as the night went on, he seemed to care less and less about the workers.”

Two area managers also talked of having to cover key jobs themselves at points of the night due to a lack of workers, saying Alderton “did not contract enough”.

One area manager claimed that due to a lack of security they had to guard the back entrance of the main stage during the headline performance to prevent guests crashing the stage, despite the fact they were responsible for overseeing two other major areas of the ball.

In light of these allegations, Alderton told Varsity “The May Ball President called my actions at the May Ball “commendable” and said that I showed “great leadership”.”

The President of Magdalene May Ball 2019 has also been contacted for comment.
