Hussain died in hospital, after being seriously injured in the city centreJOHN SUTTON

Police are treating the death of 18-year-old Benyamin Hussain as murder, after he was assaulted in central Cambridge during the early hours of Thursday 15th November.

The incident, which was reported at 3.18am, occurred on St Andrews Street outside the Grand Arcade entrance, between Christ’s College and Emmanuel College.

Hussain, from Watford, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital after suffering serious injuries, but died in hospital.

Police have not yet revealed the circumstances surrounding the fight.

A 20-year-old man from Cambridge has been arrested on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm, but has since been released under investigation. A 23-year-old man from North London was also initially arrested on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm and was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been released on condition of bail until 11th December.

A police cordon, which had been installed on St Andrews Street, was removed later on Thursday.

This incident follows recent improvements to Cambridge’s position in university city safety rankings: while a 2016 report indicated that Cambridge students reside in areas with higher-than average crime compared to other university cities, a 2017 report ranked Cambridge as the 9th safest university city in the UK.
