The Union said they would be working to reschedule Bloom's appearanceGlyn Lowe

Actor Orlando Bloom has postponed his visit to the Cambridge Union, originally scheduled for this weekend.

In an email sent to members yesterday, the Union announced that Bloom, who had been one of the headline names from this term’s lineup, had cancelled his visit due to “issues with film production scheduling”. The committee said they were seeking to reschedule his appearance.

The email also informed members that Mike Flynn, Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor, had also postponed his visit, following a cancellation of his international travel “owing to the Russia investigation in the US”. The email continued, “General Flynn hopes to visit Cambridge in May, and we are thoroughly looking forward to his visit then, when he will be able to speak more freely.”

The latest announcements mean that the line up announced at the beginning of the term is now significantly depleted, following the news that Brazilian footballer Pelé would be unable to speak at the Union due to illness. Union president Jonah Surkes confirmed that “We are planning on hosting Pelé at a later date, hopefully in March.”

Plans approved for major revamp of Cambridge Union site

Scheduled visits from previous term cards, including that of actor Tom Hiddleston, have yet to be rescheduled. Hiddleston was due to speak at the Union in Easter 2017 until his appearance was indefinitely postponed. The Union has yet to announce a date for his visit.

In a statement made to Varsity, Surkes said that while he was “sad” that Bloom would not be visiting on the date originally announced, “We are doing all we can to arrange a new date with Orlando’s team.”

He continued, “Prominent speakers often change plans last-minute, for reasons that bear no relation to the Union. Pelé and Flynn in particular have not specifically cancelled their trip to the Union but to Europe in total. We are working closely with all three speakers to arrange new dates, either later in term or in Easter.”
