Simon Blake, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Union of Students (NUS) has confirmed that the national student union will respond to a letter from CUSU calling for concerns about anti-Semitism to be addressed.

Responding to prominent disaffiliation campaigner Adam Crafton asking on Twitter if a response would be coming, Blake responded: “there will be yes Adam. Only learned of it last week.”

It comes nearly a week after Varsity revealed that CUSU had not received any formal response to a letter, mandated by Council and sent in late May, which called upon NUS to “do more to protect the rightful place of Jewish students within the student movement”.

Blake’s admission that he only learned about the letter “last week” suggests that he was made aware of its existence some time after a Varsity journalist called NUS on Tuesday 21st June, to ask if a response had been sent.

CUSU President Priscilla Mensah did not respond to questioning on whether CUSU had received a reply, saying instead that she had “a meeting scheduled with the NUS Chief Exec” for this past Monday, in which she planned to discuss the issues raised in the letter.

At the time, a NUS spokesperson said: “Although NUS has not yet sent a formal written response to CUSU, over the last month NUS officers and staff have spent time in Cambridge discussing with the union and directly with students the concerns raised in the open letter”.

Crafton described it as “shameful” that NUS was “still to provide any indication of an institutional response to the concerns of students at Cambridge.”

The letter was mandated by a vote at CUSU Council, and was released on the CUSU website on 23rd May.

It is unknown how soon a response will now be sent, or whether the response will be publicly released. The 2015-16 group of CUSU sabbatical officers finished their tenures yesterday, and will be handing over to their successors over the next two weeks.
