What’s your go-to outdoor study spot?
Take Freya Compton‘s quiz to see which outdoor study spot you’ll choose
Nothing encourages us to go outside and embrace the sunshine of Cambridge like a week as dreary and cold as this one has been. Whether term is getting you down, or you need to reconnect with nature (and your degree) after a shocker of a night out, studying outside when the clouds retreat can be the perfect fix. There are many underrated spots, the question is: are you a loyal fan to the Botanic Garden, or do you set up shop along the backs? Take this quiz to find out!
What is your ideal background noise for studying?
A) Your headphones are all you need

E) The silence of a library is not a want, but a need
Can you study with your friends?

C) With or without them, you’ll be distracted

You love the backs. Not too far from the centre of town, and with ample opportunity for a café break or a catch-up with friends, the backs offer a myriad of little hideaway spots where you can lay out a blanket and get on with work in the sun. And whether you’re inside John’s, opposite King’s, or anywhere in between, there’s always a new tree to lean on – as long as you don’t mind the occasional gawking tourist.
If you got mostly Bs…
Pub beer gardens all the way. An underrated, if somewhat controversial, spot; I maintain that pub beer gardens are the perfect way to get through a bit of reading, or have a chill study session with friends on a warm afternoon. Away from the intensity of department campuses, and with beer on tap, if you’re brave enough to risk a day of limited productivity, it’s worth it.

You’re a Botanic Garden stan. The sounds of birds, and the wind in the trees makes you feel like you’ve left the Cambridge bubble for the countryside – and you love it. Your nervous system is desperate for serenity, and with the occasional conversation to eavesdrop on, and the perfect café for a periodic hit of caffeine, the aromatic surroundings are too good to pass up.

The college bench/lawn cannot be beat. A classic favourite: the accessibility of college grounds makes it the ideal spot – you’re close enough to your room to grab a much-needed mug of tea, or to retreat if the temperature drops. Plus, it’s got benches – or even tables – scattered around in perfect locations. Despite risking an interaction with the college crush, or situationship you desperately want to avoid, nothing will break your loyalty to your favourite court.
If you got mostly Es…
None. You’d rather jump in the Cam than leave your perfect indoor study spot (or your bed). C-Sunday is the only reason you’d sit on a picnic blanket on Midsummer Common, and while you admire people embracing their outdoor whimsy, the thought of squinting at your laptop in the sun would put you off studying for the whole week.
