What story will you choose this summer?JESSICA LEER FOR VARSITY

Summer: the season of change. The possibilities are endless, or at least they seem that way. Each holiday finds my friends and I around a kitchen table discussing whether we should dye our hair or move to Barcelona for a month and return unrecognisable. Take this quiz to see what character arc you’ll be having in the next few months!

You’re about to set off for the day, which bag are you bringing?

A) A briefcase, filled with very important things. It weighs you down with the weight of its importance.

B) A suitcase, a carry-on, and a portable charger.

C) A tote bag filled with your favourite books and a journal.

D) Nothing – material objects hold you back from your destiny.

A mysterious figure walks up to you and asks you if you want to go on an adventure. (You do not know this person, but they seem trustworthy and nonthreatening.) What do you do?

A) Lift up your briefcase, displaying the importance of its contents, and then walk briskly on.

B) Say: “thanks!” but then run off. You’re already going on an adventure, but at this rate you will miss your flight.

C) Talk to them for a little to see if there’s a possibility for romance and then, having come to the conclusion that romance is out of the question, journal about it afterwards. You write down three words. You will submit this for a Pulitzer.

D) Say: “yes, absolutely!” only to find out that the mysterious stranger was trying to enrol you in a pyramid scheme. You leave disappointed, and they leave scared by your enthusiasm to go on an adventure with a complete stranger.

A friend messages you to ask you how your summer is going, how do you respond?

A) After five business days, at precisely 7:21am, you reply with: “ok, busy.”

B) You send them a pin to your location and 53 photos.

C) You write a letter in response, detailing the dramatic highs and lows of your Tuesday morning.

D) You reply saying you have just gained your green belt in karate and invite them to your showcase next Wednesday. They show up and it turns out to be a lovely event.

You walk past an open mic event at the cafe on your way home, do you go in?

A) No, you are busy and have a briefcase.

B) You would, but as you’re about to go in you get a call about a trip to Iceland and decide to go there instead.

C) ARE YOU KIDDING? This is your dream; you almost break down the doors as you leap into the cafe. Throughout your two-hour dramatic reading the audience is completely entranced, and you’re convinced that Brad in the front row has fallen head over heels. He’s never heard words like this before (Brad recently got hearing aids, you are literally the first person he is hearing).

D) You go in and surprise everyone by performing a seven-minute street dance routine. A casting agent for the next Step Up is in the audience and thinks you’ll be the perfect fit. You turn the role down; the friend who came to your karate showcase invited you to go birdwatching and that’s more important.

At the end of a long day what do you do?

A) Sleep; you are tired. That briefcase is too heavy.

B) Get on the night train to the next location!

C) Re-read Nora Ephron’s essays.

D) Watch the sunset from the roof of your house. It’s a pretty view and you don’t want to miss it.

If you picked mostly As:

You’re spending most of your summer either interning or working. You’ll return to Cambridge with experience, a savings account and an excellent knowledge of Excel. But you’ll also return with an increased awareness of the business of life which will give you a new sense of the value of your time and moments of pause. Well done for all your hard work, but make sure you get some rest too!

If you picked mostly Bs:

You are travelling every second you can. The world is wide, and you want to see as much of it as possible before the end of summer. You’ll return with stories of hostels, a tattoo you got in Peru, and a newfound appreciation for home.

What type of summer holiday are you?

You’re spending the summer getting lost in the romance of your life. You’d say summer is the most romantic season if you didn’t think that about every season. You’re spending your time writing, reading, and falling in love everywhere you go. When you return to Cambridge, you’ll look at everything differently, noticing how easy it is to love the world around you if you just let yourself.

If you picked mostly Ds:

You’re spending your summer doing absolutely anything and everything. You’ve enjoyed not having a schedule and have dedicated your time to being spontaneous and learning new things about yourself and others. When you return to Cambridge your hair might be dyed a new colour, and you might finally be able to do a cartwheel, but you’ll also be the same. This summer isn’t about changing: it’s about growing into yourself. You don’t need to have a big character arc over these next few months – you have years to change. Sometimes a season is just for taking your time.
