The entertainment kept the attendees going until the very endLiza Pacarada

I'm sorry if you were one of the people I accidentally collided with as I kept screaming 'ALIENS' in the 'Area 51' section of Newnham June Event this year, but the gold and silver painted mannequins hidden in the long grass of the college's beautiful gardens really were a good touch. All round, design was a particularly strong feature of this year's event, and the theme of 'Cosmos' was consistently carried through stands such as 'Gemini's Gin and Tonics' and horoscope readings in the 'Little Dipper' area.

Where consistency was a bit of a disadvantage, however, was in the length of queues throughout the night. Whilst by no means the worst offender this year in terms of entry queue inefficiency (a certain central college will not be named here...), lines for food and attractions stretched at times to off-putting lengths, and by 1am I eventually realised it was time to cut my losses and stick it out in order to procure some nourishing mac and cheese.

The stage played host to Snakehips before the silent discoLiza Paracada

When you did reach what you were queuing for though, it was definitely worth your time, and particularly your money. For the lower price of a June Event we received the kind of entertainment you would expect from some of the more mid-priced May Balls, including a Ferris wheel, water zorbing and fire performances. With a finishing time of 2.30am, we were definitely not short of things to do, and for those who had consumed a bit too much barbecue food to tackle the bouncy castle assault course there was a great variety of other entertainment such as a 'Cosmos Keepsake' crafting area and a smaller, more intimate tent where dance lessons from CUDT and a special Newnham Smoker drew large crowds.

On the main stage, headliners Snakehips catered particularly well to the relaxed Cambridge crowd, with a DJ set which transitioned from a Wednesday-Cindies to a Sunday-Fez vibe, finishing with their own hit, 'All My Friends'. Beforehand, The Handlers gave us some high-energy jazz covers, and the silent disco which ended the night was a particular hit which went big on cheese. Levels of exuberance were so high when S Club 7 came on that I think I almost lost an eye.

As the night drew to a close, it was clear that the downsides of queuing had been negligible in comparison to the range of entertainment and value for money we had been offered. A special mention has to go again to the strength of the theme, which influenced not only design and activities throughout but prompted a great array of costumes among guests that were in a way their own spectacle. As a student population that night we probably got through enough battery-operated fairy lights to keep a small Clas Ohlson in business for a good couple of years all by ourselves.
