Cannes film festival: the street style edition
Kate Hammond explores the Cannes street style looks that prove that fashion at the famous festival isn’t just for the red carpet
The Côte d’Azur has long been a place of elegant and sophisticated summer dressing and this year off-duty Cannes style truly embraced that Riviera chic, with the style of celebrities adopting more of a polished, classy and Eurocentric identity. Riviera stripes, retro sunglasses and 1960s vibes all contributed to that quintessentially French ‘Je ne sais quoi’ attitude, meaning that the off-duty looks at this year’s film festival were just as eye-catching and jaw-dropping as the ballgowns of the red carpet.
Emily Ratajkowski’s black bardot style dress was a new take on the classic summer dress. Espadrille wedges and a straw-thatched clutch bag meant that all the elements of a summer outfit were there, but the darker shade of the dress added a new twist.
Elle Fanning aced Riviera chic consistently at Cannes, and this outfit ensemble was no exception. Keeping things on the sweet side, the glossy silk black tie up crop top brought a 1960s vibe to the look, whilst the peach-patterned midi skirt paired with an off the shoulder, pearl-embroidered cardigan achieved a high level of sophistication.
A classic example of playsuit power, Kendall Jenner wore this whisper-thin chiffon piece, but by pairing it with Stan Smiths and layered gold necklaces Kendall downplayed the femininity of the frills, and made the look cool and casual.
In a silky three piece matched with peachy satin court heels, Bella Hadid with this look showed us the power dressing of white in summer. Luxe louche dressing done right.
For just over a week, the eyes of the world have been upon this French city, and the celebrities who descended on the famous film festival seized every opportunity to prove their style kudos both on and off the red carpet. Why can’t we all look this good ‘off-duty’?
