Beyond the academics: previewing Easter term’s Varsity fixtures
Sam Ho looks ahead to this upcoming term’s Varsity matches, spotlighting the exciting sport to come amidst the intense revision period
Everyone locked into the library while the sun is shining gives Easter term a contrasting vibe. Complaints of stress and comments from people about how ‘cooked’ they are for their exams, despite endless late nights, reflect the mood of the first six weeks of term for the vast majority of Cambridge students (except for first-year historians). On the flip side, there is indeed a large amount of sport to be excited about in the term ahead. A brief break from revision to go and support the Cambridge Blues in their respective Varsity matches will not do any harm…
“This will be a huge spectacle, given the opportunity to play at the most prestigious cricket ground in the world”
Firstly, to start the latter term of the year with a bang, the men’s and women’s cricket light Blues head to Lords, the home of cricket, to play their Varsity T20 matches on the 7th of May. This will be a huge spectacle, given the opportunity to play at the most prestigious cricket ground in the world. On the women’s side, they will be looking to avenge their 71-run loss from last year, while the men will be looking to pick up another win at Middlesex’s home ground after their comfortable 8-wicket win in 2025. 50-over one-day matches will take place at Arundel Castle on the 21st of June, before four-day fixtures from 30th of June to 3rd of July. Certainly, a busy term on the cricket side of Cambridge.
Moving onto athletics, having split the indoor fixtures in February, with the women winning both the field and relay events and the men drawing the relays and losing the field events, this event promises to be an exciting day for all athletes and spectators. Commencing on the 23rd of May, the light Blues will travel to Iffley Road, Oxford, for this year’s outdoor fixtures. Mixed results last year at Wilberforce Road mean the women will be looking to regain the Varsity trophy, while the men will be going for the three-peat, having dominated this fixture in the last couple of years.
“Life at Cambridge does extend beyond the purely academic”
Over to tennis, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th team fixtures will take place at home between the 27th-28th of June – the final weekend of the academic year at Cambridge. The Blues teams will head to Moor Park in Hertfordshire, home to exceptionally well-kept grass courts, to battle it out for this year’s Varsity bragging rights. With Oxford winning the men’s fixture last year, the light Blues will set out to overcome the dark Blues at the neutral venue. Following a tight 11-10 win for the women’s team in 2025, the light Blues will be hoping to defend their title.
Away from the main Easter term sports, Varsity matches for cycling, both road and mountain biking, will take place on the 12th of June. Horse riding will commence at the College of West Anglia between 16th and 17th of May, with the Match Rifle Varsity fixture taking place after term time on 24th July at NRA Bisley Camp down in Woking, Surrey.
Despite being a term dominated by revision and being married to the library, life at Cambridge does extend beyond the purely academic. Therefore, be sure to go and support all the Cambridge teams compete in their respective Varsity fixtures, if time and pressure allow you to!
