Come find yourself: The Darjeeling Limited

Although Christ’s Films may not provide the usual HD quality you're probably used to, the grainy picture projected on a 35mm projector adds to the cinematic atmosphere which Christ’s Films has maintained since 1978. This Sunday’s showing was The Darjeeling Limited, Wes Anderson’s quirky classic from 2007.

This inspired portrait of complex family life follows three brothers, Francis, Peter and Jack Whitman (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman), as they meet together for the first time since their father’s death. The film traces their expedition through India and their quest for spiritual fulfilment and the approval of their estranged mother. We watch intricate relationships develop between the brothers, receive an inside view of their flaws, and discover issues that they find themselves trying to come to terms with.

This film offers a unique, bluntly honest portrayal of human nature, but also excites a need to travel, a wanderlust. Darjeeling depicts a lively and colourful side to an India rich in culture, with Anderson showing the country in a hectic, yet affectionate light. Adding to the casual beauty of the film is one of Anderson’s favourite themes - that of a privileged class, their timeless fashion and strange interests. Touching, honest and highly amusing, the film features some outstanding acting and beautiful cinematography and deserves nothing less than five stars.

Though the choice of film was commendable, not many people were there to see it, with only about a quarter of the theatre filled. Also discouraging was the fact that no food or drink was allowed into the space, a major issue for those of us who love copious amounts of popcorn to munch on during a movie.

If you want to head along to watch a brilliant film on a quiet night in, Christ’s Films offer affordable showings of ‘classic’ films on Thursday evenings, with showings of newer and re-released films on Sunday evenings.
