We are Cambridge's only independent student newspaper, and the best place to make your mark on student lifeVarsity Archives

Applications to join Varsity’s social media team in Lent 2025 are now open. Apply to take your place at the beating heart of Cambridge’s current discourse and history.

Varsity is the oldest and only independent student newspaper in Cambridge, and one of only three in the UK. We hold institutions to account, representing the interests of students with integrity, ambition, and a creative edge.

This tradition, which began with the paper’s creation in 1947, has seen Varsity break many historical and discourse-shaping stories. In 1953, we reported on Watson and Crick’s discovery of the structure of DNA. In the past year, we broke the controversy surrounding “race-realist” fellow Nathan Cofnas, and the news that Cambridge’s veterinary course could lose its accreditation.

Varsity is, however, much more than just news. We have space for your opinions, interviews, and investigations, as well as room for you to express your tastes in fashion, music, or film and TV, and a section devoted to letting students have their say on the latest theatre productions in Cambridge.

We are looking to recruit up to two Heads of Social Media this term, ideally with experience in producing quality content for platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Successful applicants will have ideas for rejuvinating Varsity’s social media presence to expand the paper’s readership and reach. This would include ideas for producing multi-media and short-form content, particularly Instagram carousels and Reels. Joint or solo applications will be considered.

Head of Social Media

The Heads of Social Media will manage Varsity's social media output across Lent term, and the Michaelmas and Easter breaks. They will promote Varsity's student journalism across platforms like Instagram and Facebook, posting roundups of our output and devising new ways to engage with our readership online. Successful applicants will have experience curating a strong social media presence, and be familiar with content and video creation, particularly for Instagram. Candidates will be expected to have a range of innovative ideas to develop Varsity’s use of social media, as this will be a priority in Lent term. We are looking to recruit up to two Heads of Social Media, and will consider both joint and solo applications.

All applications for this role must include:

  • A critique of our current social media presence (300 words max)
  • Any experience you have for the role (300 words max)
  • Three ideas for Instagram posts or stories (200 words max)

The Editors-in-Chief of Varsity in Lent term will be Daisy Bates (db974) and Calum Murray (cm2241). Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the application process or what it’s like to contribute to the paper’s social media output.

Best of luck with your applications!
