Ludwig filming returns to Cambridge
Lead actor David Mitchell was spotted on All Saint’s Passage

The filming of season two of the BBC detective comedy Ludwig in Cambridge is underway, with University alumnus David Mitchell spotted in the city.
Promotional photos of Mitchell were taken on All Saint’s Passage earlier this month (05/09), and Universal Studios vans were spotted on Trinity Lane.
Written by Mark Brotherhood, the show spotlights a reclusive puzzle-setter John “Ludwig” Taylor (Mitchell), who assumes the identity of his missing twin brother James – the DCI leading Cambridge’s major crimes division – in order to investigate his disappearance.
The first series was the BBC’s biggest scripted drama of 2024, attracting over 9.5 million viewers. This success led the BBC to commission a second season last October.
Trailers were also seen at Madingley Road Park and Ride in the north-west of the city, while a camera crane and steady-cam rigs were set up on Botolph Lane.
Set to be released in spring, the next installment follows an unmasked Ludwig, now an official consultant for Cambridge police, as he continues searching for his brother, alongside sister-in-law Lucy Betts-Taylor (Anna Maxwell-Martin).
Regarding the announcement, Mitchell said: “I’m delighted that John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of the Cambridge police and will have to continue to face up to the city’s alarming conundrum-based crime wave.”
Mark Brotherhood added: “We’ve all been blown away by the reaction to Ludwig and I’m thrilled we get to come back with a whole new set of puzzles for him to solve in his unique way.”
Mitchell studied History at Peterhouse and met his comedy partner Robert Webb in the Footlights. The pair have also released a new Mitchell and Webb Look sketch show series this month.
Footlights President James Allen said: “It feels very special to have David continue his brilliant work now back in Cambridge with Ludwig. Everyone at Footlights wishes him the best of luck with the second season of the show.”
Filming of the first season took place from January 2024. At the time, Varsity reported students' reactions as both Queen's College and Silver Street bridge were taped off for filming.
Returning to Cambridge to film the show produces mixed emotions, Mitchell told Country House & Home: “I had a very happy time at university. It’s a beautiful city and it is lovely to visit. It is always slightly bittersweet because it reminds me that I will never be 21 again.”
