We're on the look out for Cambridge's best budding journosVARSITY

Applications to join Varsity’s editorial team in Lent 2023 are now open.

Varsity is Cambridge’s independent student newspaper. The paper is led by students from across the university, seeking to carve out new conversations and represent current ones.

Here in Cambridge, Varsity is as close as it gets to the ‘real thing’ (otherwise known as professional journalism). With a readership spanning across the country (and the world), our role is to report on the city and university, holding institutions to account, investigating different perspectives as well as illuminating the very best of student life.

Varsity has always sparked discussion and has reported on many discoveries and figures which have proved influential. After all, it was Varsity where figures from Wes Streeting to Hugh Laurie first appeared in print. Varsity was the first newspaper in the world to report on the discovery of DNA. The next big story in our archive is up to you.

Applications close on the 10th of December at 7pm. Please send all applications to applications@varsity.co.uk.

For those interested in writing, applications for staff writers and columnists will be published after this date.

What will the team look like?

Varsity consists of two main areas, our newspaper and magazine, Vulture. Each side of the paper will have two Deputy editors which will assist the Editors-in-Chief.

Our sections (like Comment or Film and TV) will have two editors each, one Senior and one Deputy. For those of you interested in the dynamic and fast paced world of News, scroll down for a clearer idea of our team structure—it’s a little bit different!

We also have a range of creative and digital opportunities below as well as a sub-editing team.

What does a typical week look like for a Varsity editor?

For a typical Varsity editor, your week will begin with a full editorial meeting. In these meetings, we gather our section editors together and discuss the work each one is producing.

Throughout the week you’ll liaise with your writers, edit their pieces and upload them to our site. You’ll have input from our Deputy editors who will help along the way.

By the end of the week you’ll start to think about print, gather new pieces, from articles to photography and come to the office to design your section in print.

Every other week you’ll join us at the pub for our socials to celebrate our fortnightly prints with all the team.

What skills should I have?

Unlike any other publication in Cambridge, Varsity has a print edition every two weeks. We ‘set’ the physical paper with a software called InDesign in our offices—which you can find on Mill Lane. Though it’s always helpful to have some experience, it’s absolutely not a requirement: we will provide full training. A sharp eye for detail and a creative mind are much more important assets, and we’ll be looking for these qualities in your application.

All roles are high commitment, but you’ll be working on a large team so there is plenty of support available. Editors should be personable, communicative, and reliable. They should write very well, and have the thoughtfulness and critical thinking necessary to be a thorough editor. However, no experience within Varsity nor indeed journalism is required. Varsity is a student paper—we like to think of it as a training ground, so we’re mostly looking for journalistic potential, so examples of the both above traits are more important than having vast experience.

Varsity will be overseen next term by Editors-in-Chief Famke (fpv22) and Meg (mb2398). Please email applications@varsity.co.uk if you have any queries about the application process or what it’s like to work with us!

Applications

All applications must include:

  • Your full name, subject, year, and college.
  • The role(s) for which you would like to apply.
  • Whether you would be willing to consider other positions, in the event you are not offered your desired role(s).

Deputy and Vulture editors

All Deputy and Vulture editor applications must include:

  • A critique and vision for your chosen side of the paper, what ideas do you have next term? (reference to specific sections is encouraged, 500 words max)
  • Any experience you have for the role, especially in regard to journalism, leadership, and management. (300 words max)
  • Your ideas for print across your side of the paper. (300 words max, feel free to include photos of previous setting you’ve liked in Varsity or elsewhere)
  • Feel free to include or link to any samples of your work, although this is not a requirement.

Shortlisted candidates for these roles may be invited for a short online interview next week.

Roles available

Deputy editor

We are hiring two Deputy editors. These editors will help us in imaging new ideas for the newspaper sections, publishing content on our website, setting and designing our fortnightly print edition. They will be committed, responsible individuals who have the excellent organisational skills required to manage the newspaper side of Varsity and the management skills to assist us in leading the team. Of all available roles, this is the one for which previous experience with Varsity is most essential, particularly since Deputies will be expected to set the print edition and to teach section editors how to do so.

Vulture editor

We are hiring two Vulture editors. These editors lead and manage the content and artistic direction of Varsity’s culture magazine. They should have a clear artistic vision of how the magazine can anticipate and create discussion around the Cambridge arts scene, as well as how to create engaging online content. These individuals should be creative, thoughtful, and stylistically astute, with a thorough understanding of how to orient arts and culture to a student audience. As with Deputy editors, we will value applicants to have a considerable degree of experience within Varsity, as they will be to set the print edition and to teach Vulture section editors how to do so.

Section editors

All Section editor applications must include a consideration of the following:

  • Why should students want to read your section? (200 words max)
  • Take a look at our print editions and how the section has been presented over the past terms. What do you like? What did you dislike? What should Varsity do more or less of? (images to illustrate are encouraged, 200 words max)
  • Detail any experience you may have for the role, especially in regard to journalism, editing  leadership, and management. (200 words max)
  • Propose three ideas for content in your section. (A pitch for each of around 100 words max)

Roles available (newspaper)

News editor

Want to be at the forefront of Cambridge’s news scene? The Varsity News editorial team is the place for you. News is Varsity’s biggest section, playing an essential role in Cambridge, providing timely, objective, and incisive reporting on stories relevant to our readers. Our coverage serves not only to inform Varsity readers, but to hold institutions in the city to account. Members of the team must be engaged with goings-on in Cambridge, and be both knowledgeable and critical in their coverage of issues prominent in the Cambridge community. Members of the News team will be expected to attend weekly in-person meetings at the Varsity offices during full term.

Senior News editor: The Senior News editors will lead a team of Deputy News editors and news correspondents. They are responsible for commissioning writers and editing copy, reacting to breaking news as well as identifying important issues to explore further. The Senior News editors must commit to training Varsity’s news correspondents, and commit to receiving further news training from other experienced news writers at the paper. Senior News Editors will also be responsible for leading weekly News meetings. We are hiring two SNEs.

Deputy News editor: The Deputy News editors assist the Senior News editors in finding stories and editing. DNEs have a diverse role, investigating larger issues, writing, editing and mentoring news correspondents. This is a great intermediate role in the section. We will be looking to hire four DNEs.

Comment editor

Comment is one of Varsity’s most popular sections. We want a Comment team motivated by a passion for different opinions, who are compelled by the discussions around them of Cambridge’s key issues. Comment editors should push for excellent writing, showcasing new perspectives on a range of issues. Editors will lead and train a range of staff writers and columnists, as well as responding to pitches from around the university.

Features editor

The Features section spotlights key issues in Cambridge, from a human interest perspective. Whether that is explorative work into the first generation of men at Lucy Cavendish, or the secretive Nightclimbers group. Features may also be written from a personal perspective, connecting to the news or topical issues. We’re looking for Features editors who are interested in stories across this spectrum, are engaged with the issues that dominate the news in Cambridge, but also an individual with an eye for interesting perspectives. The Features editors must be comfortable helping writers turn these ideas into compelling pieces of journalism that engages the attention of a wider audience, opening eyes to new issues or introducing new perspectives on older ones.

Interviews editor

Our Interviews editors get the chance to meet fascinating and high-profile people from all walks of life. Interviews editors should also understand the landscape within Cambridge, finding new voices within our community to interview. They need to keep up-to-date with events in Cambridge and be proactive in seeking out opportunities to interview interesting people, beyond the venues where Varsity’s interviews have traditionally taken place. We want someone who understands how compelling a good interview can be, has an instinct for who Varsity’s readers want to know more about, and engages with breaking news.

Science editor

There is arguably no better place than Cambridge to be a student Science editor, and we’re looking to increase and diversify the section's output. Over the holidays, the Science team will look to recruit staff science writers to report on groundbreaking research in Cambridge, explore the research community and open discussion on topical scientific issues. It’s an exciting time to head the section, spearheading our continued efforts to engage with the brimming scientific community at our fingertips, and simultaneously render our Science content accessible to students from all academic backgrounds.

Sport editor

Sport is one of Varsity’s busiest and most vibrant sections and the Sport editors are in a prime position to shape discussions around sport in Cambridge. They are responsible for covering match reports, interviews, guides and features every week, covering as wide a range of sports and sporting experiences as possible, across all levels. The Sport editors will lead a team of correspondents and staff writers, pushing for diversified and exciting content for the section.

Roles available (Vulture)

Arts editor

The Arts section covers everything from opinion-led exhibition reviews to exploratory pieces on current artistic subjects which will prove thought-provoking to students. Cambridge-centred content will naturally be an important feature of the section; you’ll be expected to liaise with institutions like the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge-based creatives to produce insightful pieces on what’s going on in the arts scene. Arts editors will be inventive and expressive in their writing, and thoughtful in their editing.

Film & TV editor

Our Film & TV editor will have a sharp eye for exciting new releases, and commission pieces ingrained both in what’s trending right now, and what’s interested students in the cinematic world for decades. We’re looking to publish timely, punchy reviews—covering everything from the new season of The Crown to considered critiques of Paul Mescal’s performance in Aftersun. This is where readers turn to for their pop-culture fix, could you be the person sparking conversation?

Music editor

Passionate about the music scene at Cambridge? This term, we’re looking for editors that are in-the-know about what students are listening to, where to see up-and-coming student bands, and aren’t afraid to publish pieces on new releases that aren't quite making their mark. Next term, we’re keen to commission more externally focused pieces, like timely and relevant album reviews which have generated online interest. We also want to push content that anticipates discussion—applicants should seek out uncovered areas and draw attention to them.

Fashion editor

We’re looking for creative and curious individuals with an eye for style to join the Fashion section. Beyond writing and editing content, the Fashion editors are responsible for organising photoshoots—creating concepts, sourcing models and recruiting a photographer through liaising with the Vulture editors and our digital team. This role is for people who want to anticipate and influence Sidgwick fashion trends, as well as immerse themselves in the general world of fashion.

Theatre editor

Theatre editors should be well-versed in the performing arts scene at Cambridge. This role requires excellent communication and time management skills—reviews often have a 24 hour turnaround, from writers seeing the play, to Vulture editors living the articles. You’ll be in close contact with various theatrical institutions, including the ADC Theatre and various student societies, as well as directors and producers who will be looking to Varsity to produce high-quality, frank, and insightful reviews and interviews. We like to think of Theatre as the ‘News’ of Vulture in terms of its fast pace and considerable output, so please apply if you’re looking for a challenging but culture-focused editorial role!

Lifestyle editor

Vulture’s most fun and down-to-earth section. From organising and writing-up blind date columns to directing agony aunts, you’ll be managing Cambridge’s most playful and engaging writers to produce a variety of lifestyle content for our readers. Editors will need to be up-to-date on social media trends and should generate amusing conversations within the student body. Food reviews, horoscopes, and pieces on novel experiences will also be at the heart of the section.

Other editorial roles

We're also looking to hire several roles within Varsity's digital and production teams. Click the drop-box below to see what's required of each role, and what we need from you in your application.

Sub-editor

We are looking to recruit a number of sub-editors as well as a Chief Sub-editor, who will manage the team of sub-editors to ensure content is sub-edited in a timely and high-quality fashion. They are key to ensuring that Varsity maintains its reputation for clear and professional journalism. They ensure that all pieces conform to our in-house style, and flag any potentially unsuitable or inaccurate content. To apply, please provide a critique of an article from any section from the past term, with particular attention to the detailed improvements which a sub-editor could make, both in regard to the writing and the subbing (300 words max). Please also include an explanation of any experience you have for the role and state whether you would like to be considered for the Chief Sub-editor role (300 words max).

Head of Media, Photography, and Video

We’re looking for an individual interested in photojournalism and videography to lead our stellar team of illustrators, photographers, and videographers next term. They’ll be well-placed to organise coverage of breaking stories, video interviews of high-profile individuals, and assist the Fashion and Vulture editors in coordinating photoshoots for print. This term we are specifically interested in producing longer form video content so the candidate will aid us to arrange and produce this. To apply, please send us a short application detailing any experience you have for the role, and a short portfolio of your previous work, whether that’s with Varsity, or with any other publication, society, or enterprise.

Newsletter editor

Next term we’re beginning Varsity’s first curated Newsletter. Much like other national publications' newsletters, we’re aiming for the weekly email to be a guide to the Cambridge week in brief, with news analysis, images of the week, what's on guides and much more. As the first Newsletter editor, you will be key in shaping what this project will look like when it arrives in our inboxes. We’re looking for someone with an eye for creative design and potentially an interest in PR or marketing. If you have experience using newsletter software like MailChimp please detail in the application, but no experience is necessary. Your application should consist of an outline of your own ideas for the Varsity Newsletter (300 words max), and any relevant experience of being creative, committed or reliable that would aid you in the role (200 words max). For reference take a look at other national publications (Tortoise, The Guardian, The Spectator).

Setters

Interested in helping us format and publish print? Join our team of setters, who will accompany editors in the office in laying out and smoothing over every page. If you’ve got a keen eye for details, have great digital capabilities (knowing your way around InDesign and Photoshop would be incredibly helpful, though not a requirement), and are interested in being part of the print process, this is the role for you.

To apply for this role, please send us a portfolio of your work (and any ideas you have for print) and answer the following: what newspapers have the best and worst setting? (max 300 words). And what’s the weirdest thing you’ve made via Photoshop or another editing software? (max 200 words).

Best of luck with your applications!
