Pembroke College has introduced a curfew banning students congregating on college grounds after 8pm, an email seen by Varsity states.

The College has also closed their bar “until further notice” as a result of an “incident” that occured last night (30/04), and guests have been banned from the site between 8pm and 6am.

According to Varsity’s sources, the incident involved many students from outside the College being invited into Pembroke’s bar - a move which the College has described as a “serious breakdown in public health”, carried out by “incredibly selfish individuals”.

In an email to students, the College outlined a ban on group gatherings on College lawns after 8pm, including between members of the same household.

An anonymous student told Varsity that this policy will prevent students fasting during Ramadan from eating with friends after the sun sets.

The student also reported that a sprinkler was turned on Pembroke students who were sitting on the College lawns, in order to disperse them.

Porters have been instructed to report students who partake in “egregious breaches of discipline, including amplified music, sitting near amplified music and drunkness” to the Proctor, the email reads.

The email adds that students who ignore or refuse to comply with Porters when confronted for their behaviour will also be reported to the Proctor. In the case of Pembroke students letting outside visitors into their buildings, the college will use CCTV and card reader information to identify them, also referring these students to the Proctor.

It continues: “The incident last night constituted a serious breakdown in public health, in respect for the law, and an abject breakdown in respect for other College members - especially staff. To say that I am sorry and disappointed to have to put these measures in place is a considerable understatement.”

Varsity has contacted Pembroke College for comment.
