Thomas Millward was found injured in Girton College in March 2015trialsanderrors

A pre-inquest review on Thursday into the death of Thomas Millward, a student of Girton College, presented findings of LSD in his system.

The engineering student was found injured in Girton College in March 2015 after police were called to the scene.

The first-year student, who has been described as “exceptional” by his parents, was taken to Addenbrooke’s hospital with serious head injuries, where he died the following day.

Cambridgeshire Police said that Mr Millward’s death was not being treated as suspicious, however a 19-year-old woman from Cambridge was arrested on the grounds of suspicion of supplying drugs.

Before the full inquest, evidence of possible witnesses running up and down a corridor before the incident and a footprint on a vending machine nearby is being considered.

Brian Millward, Thomas Millward’s father, spoke of his concerns about the height of the safety railing on an upper landing at Girton College during a pre-inquest review at Cambridgeshire Coroner’s Court in Huntingdon.

Brian Millward said, “On the upper floor the guard rail was considerably lower than the building regulations that would be recommended for such a guard”.

He was also concerned that a post-mortem examination had not been carried out. "It might have given possible indications of how high he fell from," he said, "whether his knee had given way or that kind of thing”.

Simon Milburn, Cambridgeshire assistant coroner, explained that a post-mortem examination had not been ordered because doctors had been able to identify the cause of death "with a significant degree of certainty". As a result, he said, "nothing could be added by a post-mortem examination".

In a statement last year, Thomas Millward's parents, Brian and Maisa Millward, described their son as "an extremely intelligent, talented, handsome and loving boy" who was "loved so dearly by his family and friends".

A spokesperson from the University of Cambridge said, "Girton College continues to mourn the loss of Thomas Millward, who is remembered as a gifted student, loyal friend and keen sportsman."

Medical evidence will be heard at a later date before a jury, during a three-day inquest
