Blind Date: ‘The ball’s in her court!’
Bix and Cecelia meet at the Maypole for a blind date
Bix on Cecelia
So, why did you sign up?
I actually didn’t – I got signed up by a friend! He just came in one day like “I signed you up for a blind date at 2am” and I was like “you whaaat?”
Were you annoyed?
I kind of thought ‘what have you done? ’, but he said he knew I wouldn’t be too mad and would go on it anyway, which was fair.
Are you going to sign him up in retaliation?
No, the thing is, all my friends are in a relationship… hence the signup.
I hope he described you accurately on the form, at least!
I’d say the answers were accurate, they just made me sound more annoying than I actually am…
Well, you guys met at the Maypole – what was the vibe initially?
It was really nice, really good chat – barely any awkward silences.
What kind of stuff did you talk about?
A lot about being at Cambridge, and then quite a lot of talk about animals – she’s a big animal person and interested in marine facts. It was very interesting – I learned a lot of orca facts!
Did you get onto any of your favourite topics?
Yeah, we got talking about World War One – it was nice to be able to talk about these interests, and not just the weather and stuff. She’s a HisPol student, and I do English, so she probably has more information on it.
You were mansplaining WW1 to a historian?
I was like “yeah, well, the poetry…”
“I think she was happy I was up for having quite an intense conversation”
How would you describe her in general?
She was lovely – super chatty! Even more than I was.
What do you think she thought of you?
I think she was happy I was up for having quite an intense conversation – not surface-level.
You were both self-proclaimed intense in your application, do you think that was true?
She is kind of intense. Lovely! But intense. I don’t think that was a bad thing though, it kind of eased my anxiety.
Like, you didn’t have to carry the conversation on your back?
Yeah, no, not at all!
It seems like it was a nice chat, but not overly romantic?
Yeah, I think it was best-case scenario, honestly. I had like three hours of a really nice evening, but it didn’t feel very romantic to me. Maybe if we met again it’d be different!
Do you think she’d say the same?
Umm maybe?
Any mention of meeting again?
Yeah, we talked about that. I’d definitely be up for seeing her again – that’s for sure – but whether it’d be a romantic thing is the question.
Well, what would you rate the date on a scale from one to ten?
Like a seven, or an eight?

Cecelia on Bix
How come you signed up?
My friend did, so I just joined with him!
Are you looking for love right now?
Yeah, it’d be quite nice to be in a relationship.
And how did you feel going in?
I was quite nervous, but also excited to see what she was like and if we’d hit it off!
How did it go from there?
I found it really easy to talk to her, she’s a very approachable person.
You guys got into a good rhythm, then?
Yeah, I think the conversation flowed well and we had similar interests.
What kind of interests?
Well, there was overlap in terms of musicals, and she’s in the choir so we talked about that. Really natural conversation.
Was it like that the whole night?
Yeah, it was nice. And after the Maypole we went to get Jack’s and continued to talk.
What was your takeaway, chemistry-wise?
I think maybe we could build up to it being romantic, but there weren’t, like, sparks. We’ve got each other’s Instagrams, though, so we could meet up in the future.
“We discovered we both auditioned for the same play – and she got it!”
What was the vibe at the end of the night?
We floated the idea of getting bubble tea sometime, but nothing’s set in stone. The ball’s in her court! And, I mean, I walked away from the date quite happy, so not a loss either way.
Any particularly memorable moments?
Well, we both like theatre, and we discovered we both auditioned for the same play – and she got it! I just kept referencing Pearl, like “please, I’m a star!”
I mean, maybe you’ll see her at an audition some day…
Yeah, and she can take another part from me! (laughs)
Lastly, how would you rate the night from one to ten?
I’d probably say an eight and a half – I had a nice night!
