Blind Date: ‘I realised in the end that we weren’t going to bond over anything’
Second-year history student, Katie, meets third-year law student, Joe
Katie on Joe
So you guys met for a pub quiz at The Anchor – what was the vibe?

It was a little bit… barren. At the end, it was empty except for three old Caius alumni.
Well, how did it start?
He asked if I wanted to get a drink and for some reason I just immediately said no… so then we just sat.
How did he take that?
He looked a little surprised but I just tried to move past the moment.
“He asked if I wanted to get a drink and for some reason I just immediately said no”
Was there much awkwardness at first?
Well, at first it was weird because he looked a lot older! But I felt better once I found out he was in undergrad.
Did you guys bond over any of the question topics?
He said he knew a lot about football but he wasn’t able to answer many of the questions… I think I realised in the end that we weren’t going to bond over anything.
How would you describe him?
He was really open and talkative! There just wasn’t a connection there.
“He said he knew a lot about football but he wasn’t able to answer many of the questions”
Any red flags?
He said he didn’t want to be associated with Birmingham – he’s from near there – and I thought that sounded a bit… classist.
Did the conversation flow at least?
Well, we talked for a while but then we just locked in on the quiz. It was more so freshers-type questions than anything.
Were there any laughs?
Silence… no, just at the three old men next to us.
Do you think you guys were on the same page about how it was going?
I think he was the same, yeah, chill, but not taking it too seriously – at least I hope so!
Did the date come to a natural end?
I just got super tired and hinted that I was ready to go.
And if you had to rate the date on a scale from one to ten?
I’d say a five.
So no chance of a second date?
I think he hinted at one, but I wasn’t sure – either way I wouldn’t want to go. We did exchange Instagrams though.
Sorry for sending you to a dead quiz night!
Well, the prize was like 50 quid so…
Did you win?
Obviously not – we had three Cambridge alumni sitting next to us!

So I hear the Anchor wasn’t the best date spot…
It was pretty quiet, just us versus these guys in their fifties – we stood no chance. We both knew so little about music that they kept trying to give us hints!
That wasn’t a trauma bonding moment for you two?
I wouldn’t say so – I don’t think we ever addressed how quiet it was.
So just you and these older men battling it out for the cash prize?
Yeah, in my mind that was the reason why we had to stay there – but I don’t think I said that.
“She wouldn’t let me buy her a drink”
How would you describe her?
She was quite quiet, and my hearing is not the best, so that made conversation a bit difficult – it got easier throughout the evening though.
Did she have any icks?
Looks-wise no. But she wouldn’t let me buy her a drink – she insisted on buying her own! I get it, but we both know what scenario we’re in, so why not play up to it?
And you didn’t consider going somewhere else after the quiz ended?
The winners actually bought us a round of drinks! I asked if she fancied staying and she said yes, but I don’t think she was too enthusiastic about it.
How did you feel about the match in general?
I don’t know if it was just the set-up, but I didn’t feel any romantic connection. We definitely got on – just in a very platonic way.
You exchanged Instagrams, do you think you’ll reach out as friends?
I don’t think so – I’d just spent the evening with her so it only felt right to exchange contacts.
If you ran into her on Sidge, would you say hi?
Oh absolutely! I wouldn’t just walk past.
And finally, what would you rate the experience from one to ten?
I might be inclined to give it a five.
