Music: Some Say I So I Say Light
Jessica Poon is taken aback by the sheer variety found in Ghostpoet’s sophomore full length release.
Ghostpoet's Some Say All So I Say Light is no mean feat; a whole mash-up of genres from something verging on dubstep to acid jazz. The album opens with the heavy trance beats of 'Cold Win' which conjure up a dirty acid trip in a nineties club - in effect setting the premise of a very unpredictable album.
Obare Ejimiwe, the mastermind behind this impeccable series of sounds, humbly claims of his own work: "It sounds rough and gritty, which is important to me - it's not a glossy record. It's almost like a glossy record that's been thrown down a ravine and scratched and roughed up a bit." This is exactly how it sounds. Eclectic doesn't even cut the transition from the aggressive 'Them Waters' to the ambient 'Sloth Trot'. It would be unfair to pin Ejimiwe under one genre, as he spans far and in-between types, surprising the listener with an injection of pop in 'Plastic Bag Brain' amongst the darker anxieties he expresses in 'Dial Tones'; "...need some sugar like a wine gum fiend/ So spring black humour try and crowbar a smile." Ejimiwe's lyrics are looped narratives which express paranoia and a sense of wandering; similar to what we'd get if we crossed Bukowski with a synth. Nothing is as it seems in the maestro's exploration of sound and poetry.
Some Say I So I Say Light is ultimately indescribable, save the fact that it's a little bit dirty house, a little bit dark wave, wrapped up in a whole lot of ambience. If you're a fan of the XX, Alt J, and Bloc Party then maybe it's time to get this album.
