The Spoons-to-Picturehouse pipeline
Salomé Gakwaya sells a full day out of drinks and films on St Andrew’s Street

It’s Tuesday morning, the sky is greyed out, and somehow, I’ve found myself enjoying a Spoons breakfast while tinkering on my dissertation. Many might judge, but when there’s free hot drink refills and an endless supply of hash browns, can you blame me?
With the dim lights, carpet, and dark brown tables, you could almost pretend that you’re sat in the college library and that there isn’t a faint smell of tequila and vomit that hangs in the air. I have to admit that there is an eccentric crowd (morning-drinkers, other students, and families) but all the more reason to settle in as it provides the perfect people watching material. But Spoons isn’t the only reason I’m here today. On this rainy morning, I’m reminded that St Andrew’s Street is home to more than just cheap breakfasts – it’s also a haven for film lovers, offering the perfect spot to unwind after a hectic day.
The Arts Picturehouse stands proudly as a cornerstone of the cinematic community in Cambridge. Whether you’re in the mood for a fresh new release, an arthouse film, or even an old classic, there’s always something playing here. There is a luxurious feel to emerging from the dark dungeon of Spoons and re-enter the light of day as you climb the stairs. With tickets for weekday screenings only costing you £5.99, the cheap outing continues, making it a no-brainer when you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank. And after a long day of reading and essay writing, there’s nothing quite like sinking into a cinema chair and losing yourself in a captivating film.
“If you’re lucky, you might even catch a whispers of other film watchers chatting excitedly”
Whether you’re at a film you’ve been dying to see or just picked whatever was on, there’s nothing quite like finding the perfect seat (two rows up from the stairs slightly on the right-hand side of the centre) with the largest bag of popcorn you could sneak into your bag. For Cambridge students who are passionate about film, the Picturehouse is a sanctuary that celebrates the art of cinema, offering a place to discover new releases, revisit classics, and engage in the kind of cinematic experience that goes beyond just watching a film; it’s about the entire atmosphere and community that comes with it.
“Grab a bite at Spoons, catch a film at the Picturehouse”
It would be remiss of me to talk about a trip to the Picturehouse without mentioning its cafe. While the cafe isn’t quite as cheap as Spoons (you won’t find any £1 drinks here), it offers a much lighter working environment than the cavern below. With huge windows the cover one side of the café, and lots of little tables scattered around, you can continue working hard and eavesdropping. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a whispers of other film watchers chatting excitedly about their latest discoveries and give you inspiration.
I have found that the only way to get anything done, is to hide yourself away in the less visited Cambridge corner, avoid the conversations that lurk at every corner in college and at Sidge, and promise yourself a reward at the end. What better way to do that then to cycle ten minutes away from all distraction (friends and your bed) and commit to the day trip at 38-39 St Andrew’s Street.
A day spent at Spoons followed by a visit to the Picturehouse might seem like an unlikely combination, but in fact, it’s the perfect way to combine work, comfort, and entertainment. Whether you’re indulging in an all-you-can-eat breakfast at Spoons or immersing yourself in a whole new world at the Picturehouse, it’s a simple yet satisfying way to unwind and treat yourself after a long day.
The best part? It’s affordable, making it an accessible option for students looking to take a break from the usual routine. With exams, essays, and endless readings hanging over your head, these little outings offer a moment to disconnect while still feeling productive. So, next time you find yourself needing a little pick-me-up, take a detour down St Andrew’s Street – grab a bite at Spoons, catch a film at the Picturehouse, and enjoy the little luxuries of life that make Cambridge feel like home.
