They magically create the perfect stylish combination at the same time being the simplest piece.GINA STOCK WITH PERMISSION FOR VARSITY

How can you spice up your summer wardrobe this year? Varsity’s fashion team are back with our favourite fashion pieces for the 2025 season.

Gina:

I’m taking chunky, layered jewellery into this summer. Cold weather opens the door to a world of layering possibilities, and I find it easy to create an original look by using clashing patterns and fabrics with jumpers, shirts, tights and skirts. Unfortunately, the heat means I’d unironically like to be wearing as little fabric as possible, so I bring that same pop of chaotic colours and patterns into an outfit with rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. I’m currently sporting a chunky faux-amber beaded necklace that was a lucky charity shop find, and mixing golds and silvers in my rings, which are an eclectic mix of vintage, independent, etsy, and gifted pieces.

“I’ve been longing for the moment I could finally step out in something so small yet so bold”

Ellie:

I won’t be entering summer without my trusty pair of Birkenstock sandals. Basic, I know, but they’re also reliable, comfortable through the moulding to your feet, and they’re a classic that goes with any outfit. This means I can wear a colourful fit without it all falling to pieces when it comes to picking a shoe, because my birkies are there ready to support. Not only this, but they’re multifunctional for summer: perfect for going out for a casual bite to eat, but also the perfect beach sandal. They’re the optimal shoe for warmer months!

Sofia:

This summer, my wardrobe is revolving around micro shorts. Since winter, I’ve been longing for the moment I could finally step out in something so small yet so bold. They magically create the perfect stylish combination at the same time being the simplest piece. They cling like a second skin, yet make a statement that feels gloriously impractical and undeniably un-casual – exactly the impression I want to give because my life IS a fashion show. Even though micro shorts look fabulous on their own I can’t wait to wear them with sarongs or sheer skirts, because the weather will never stop me from layering.

“Timeless, practical, subversively glamorous”

Arshika:

Belts! Belts! Belts! Now, I personally can’t handle anything that sticks to my skin during the summer season which often means I’m dressed in loose fitting dresses or tops which are a couple sizes too big. And whilst the formless figure is one which I’m not opposed to, I love the idea of bringing some structure to my outfits through belts. Although not particularly unique to summer, I find that my lighter wardrobe during the warmth pairs best with my variety of belts. The additional benefit of the effortless intrigue I can add to my outfits through a belt has been a constant driving factor to help curate my outfits during the hectic exam term. Leather, studded, metal, cloth; you name it I’ve got it and I’ll be wearing them all summer!

Zinzi:

I know summer is hot and this is going to feel counterintuitive, but stay with me here: vintage scarves! This summer, I am styling all manner of scarves – paisley, polka dot, silk, lace – around my head and tied under the chin, like a Babushka, as I pursue my summer granny hobbies. Channelling both Hollywood Golden Age glamour and grandma chic, this is going to be the look of the summer. Paired with some sleek sunglasses and perhaps a bouncy curl, this timeless look will undoubtedly elevate your summer look book. It’s functional too – keeps hair in check on humid days, shields you from the sun, and doubles as a neckerchief or bag accent when you’d like to remove it. Timeless, practical, subversively glamorous. Do not underestimate the power of a thrifted scarf to add some colour and class to your outfits.

A plague of polka-dots

I will be taking a chunky pair of leather boots into the summer. Naturally I find myself layering less as the weather gets hotter, however being the symbol of fashion consciousness that I am, I give my outfits some weight and keep them composed via my choice of boot. I find my dark cherry-red boots are most versatile: they pair so well with a deep bluish-grey jean (my 80s 501s were a lucky vinted find), but can be married to lighter sky-blue jeans too. A pair I have been wearing lots recently are my monkey platform boots that were a gift from my mother; otherwise I can be found with a pair of doc martens, which have never let an outfit of mine down.
