Review: King’s Mingle
A magical, if confusing, night of hedonism
There is a venerable tradition in Cambridge of flaunting our wide vocabularies through obscure themes. The King's Mingle 'Chimera' theme was no exception, and watching students try and understand the concept through mascara and body glitter was entertaining in itself. Certainly, guests last night rose to the challenge. Strange and oblique references to random estimations of mythical creatures abounded, and they looked magical. There was also a roaming crowd of Professional Wastemen: less fantastical, but as mysterious as the theme itself.
Clearly a lot of work and thought had gone into the decor, and that added to the dystopian atmosphere of the night. Balloons and materials were used creatively to take students on an transformative visual journey throughout the night.
The music was fantastic throughout the night, the dance floors remained heaving in every room. No small achievement when one considers most Cambridge clubs struggle to do the same with a quarter of the space to fill. The live bands gave each room a distinct atmosphere and balanced the equally successful DJ sets. Pedestrian's headline slot was a storming success, and there was also the welcome return of Tom Scott, ex-student DJ and former regular at King's Bunker.
There were also some heart-warming acoustic sets; Riley Thorold was a particularly lovely.
The mood of the evening was helped no end by the prospect of the Lola Lo’s after party. While Lola’s itself may have turned out to be exactly like Lola’s, it made a huge difference that even as the bunker was closing up there was a sense that night was just getting started, the prospect of going until six had people geared up for a ‘proper night’ even if they didn't quite make it after one too many fluorescent drinks.
