Firefighters put out blaze at Addie’s car park
12 fire crews were sent to the hospital on Saturday afternoon
Fire crews were called to a major blaze at the car park of Addenbrooke’s Hospital on Saturday afternoon (13/12).
No injuries have been reported, although around 12 vehicles on the second floor of Car Park One, the hospital’s main car park, are thought to have been affected.
The fire service reported sending 12 crews to the hospital at 16:16 on Saturday. Ambulances and police services were also called to the scene, from both Cambridgeshire and its surrounding counties.
Firefighters stayed at the scene overnight to dampen down the area, and nearby roads were closed as firefighters dealt with what they described as a “major incident”.
A spokesperson for the Cambridgeshire Fire Service said that the fire was extinguished on Saturday evening, and that an investigation into its cause will take place.
They also expressed their thanks to “those affected for their patience”. This came after residents were encouraged to stay away from the area on Saturday, and several roads were closed, including Puddicombe Way, Adrian Way, Richard Howe Way, and Robinson Way.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said that those with vehicles in the car park should “please wait to hear from us”.
“We know how hard this situation is for those visiting loved ones and for staff trying to get to work,” they continued.
On Sunday evening, a hospital spokesperson announced: “Car park 1 will remain closed for the foreseeable future following the fire yesterday. If you have an appointment or are a visitor, please use Trumpington or Babraham Road park and ride where possible.”
