Floreat Antiqua Hummus: Corpus Christi adds well-loved dip to daily Hall menu

Corpus will never be short of hummus with the delicacy coming to Hall, Violet News Correspondent Sneha Lala reports

Middle-class dreams have come true at Corpus Christi with the addition of hummus pots to the daily Hall menu.

While other students will read on with envy, this is the news Corpus vegetarians have been waiting for – ever since Sienna Hewavidana, a HSPS student and Violet deputy editor, suggested the idea to her JCR catering officer, Tanmay Sukthankar.

Sukthankar, who describes himself on the Corpus JCR page as “the dude all about the food” and “the bringer of menus and joy”, has managed to insert more fun into lunch and dinner offerings by fulfilling his manifesto promise to provide hummus.

“I started trying to get hummus for the veggies in Corpus,” he said, explaining the momentous hummus move to Violet. “Plus, I’m a massive fan myself. It’s a total win-win scenario.”

In an announcement on the undergraduate catering page, Sukthankar revealed pots of the chickpea dip would be available for 70p each. The catering team is running a trial period for the dish, but if successful, “hummus will become a mainstay of Hall”.

The reaction has been positive and strangely prophetic, with Corpus student Sam Brown telling Violet: “God works in mysterious ways”. We take that to mean he’s for the move.

Another hummus apostle was less impressed, however, given the failure to indulge those allergic to the standard spread. “I feel personally victimised as a hummus-lover allergic to chickpeas,” said Leah Segal. “I have no self-control so I’ll end up eating it.”

The delicacy comes close to the bone not only for the vegetarians and hipsters of Cambridge, but half a dozen Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries, including Lebanon and Israel, dispute ownership of the dish. The custody battle has even been explored in a 2012 documentary, ‘Make Hummus Not War’.

The origin of Corpus hummus, however, is undisputed. As the college explains online, “It is freshly made by our amazing chefs so it will be a variable thing with variable flavours.”
