Cambridge students and meme-lovers alike were gutted when Wolfson College lost to Balliol in the final of this year’s University Challenge.

But for some, Wolfson’s success in the competition (as they had only competed once before) was still a cause for celebration. Yesterday, a group of 21 Wolfson students attended a formal swap – or crew date, as they are known in the Other Place – with their sister college, Oxford’s St Anthony’s.

According to Wolfson’s External Officer, Sebastian Wrobel, during their guided tour around Oxford, they asked to be shown Balliol College “in the light of our recent University Challenge final match.”

Speaking to Violet, Wrobel revealed that the group donned masks of the captain Eric Monkman, who quickly became an internet sensation following his captaincy of the team on this year’s show: “We took one group picture to honour our team’s great success ... and their exceptional captain [we took] one picture with the Monkman masks.”

Sian Bradshaw also commented on the masks, revealing “Seb Wrobel ... had surprised us and come armed with lots of pictures of Monkman.”

The cult quiz show has just finished its 46th season, and prior to Balliol’s victory this year, Cambridge had enjoyed three successive wins
