May Ball: Queens
Who knew what the theme really was, but who cared? Queens was overflowing with Satanic tricks and heavenly delights
It’s not often that one goes to a May Ball with the expectation of being judged. ‘Judgement’ it was though and from the angelic to the devilish, Queens’ May Ball combined it all with myriad earthly pleasures in between. Despite being tenuously themed, the committee put on a great night in fine style. Although they didn’t quite manage to uphold their reputation for putting on as big name acts as they have had in previous years (amongst them Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs and more recently, Florence and the Machine), Bombay Bicycle Club put on an act that kept revellers happily on their toes. Newcomer Alex Clare however gave the headliners a run for their money with buoyant tracks from his yet to be released album.
Above and beyond this though it was what could be ingested that proved to be the real highlight. A whole tent dedicated to a divine array of desserts surrounding a mountainous piles of fruit couldn’t fail to be popular and jelly-makers, Bompas and Parr, who cater for no less a personage than Madonna, provided something a bit more original than the ubiquitous chocolate fountain (which were, of course, present too).
The basic concept of the decor was to vary it between the heavenly and hellish. Green fingered decorators must have been hard at work all day as flowers shaped into unicorns, peacocks and other intricate shapes filled the ‘heaven’ areas. On the flip side, a devil’s playground complete with bumper cars and laser quest gave a place to work off all the dessert consumed.
Although the theme was somewhat lost and perhaps could have done with a little more thought, the college had been transformed for the night. A May Ball as expected but when Queens’ Ball had been weighed and measured by those attending, everyone seemed to judge it a brilliant night.
