CUSU calls for full investigation into death of Giulio Regeni
Motion calls for a “proper investigation”

Cambridge University Students’ Union has called for a “proper investigation” into the death of Italian Cambridge PhD student Giulio Regeni.
The decision, passed as an emergency motion by CUSU Council on Monday night, stated that following the disappearance of Regeni in Cairo last week, “there should be a complete and full investigation”.
The motion, proposed by the entire sabbatical team, mandates CUSU’s officers to sign the UK Parliament petition calling for an investigation, to circulate the petition with JCRs and MCRs, and to mandate CUSU President Priscilla Mensah to write an open letter to the British Ambassador to Egypt.
The motion noted that the death of Regeni had been “widely publicised in local and national media”, and that both the University itself and a group of 4,600 academics had lent their support for a full investigations already.
CUSU President, Priscilla Mensah, said “the university has responded but nothing has yet come from the student body”.
It received an amendment to mandate the sabbatical team to contact other universities and publicise the petition, and to also contact the Italian ambassador.
The motion passed with all those present voting for the motion.
