A 23-year-old Anglia Ruskin University student who was arrested on Friday for allegedly throwing a fire extinguisher from the roof of Millbank Tower during Wednesday's national student protests in London has been released on bail.

The student, who is believed to be from Reading, was arrested by Cambridgeshire Police on the request of London's Metropolitan Police.

Varsity understands that the student was released on bail on Saturday from Parkside police station in Cambridge.

The Metropolitan Police released a statement, confirming that "Police in Cambridgeshire, on behalf of the Metropolitan police servce, have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of violent disorder on Wednesday 10 November.

"He is in custody at a Cambridgeshire police station. This arrest follows an investigation into public disorder on Wednesday 10 November where a fire extinguisher was thrown from the roof of Millbank Tower."

The Anglia Ruskin Students' Union also released a statement confirming the arrest. According to Matt East, President of the Students' Union, "We, Anglia Ruskin Students' Union, organized for a group of 200 students to attend the NUS national demonstration in London.

"During the demonstration Angla Ruskin students acted respectfully and protested peacefully. However, on Thursday 11th November we learnt that an incident had occured allegedly involving an Anglia Ruskin student.

"Anglia Ruskin Students' Union does not condone any act of violence nor supports the action that took place between the hours of 3pm and 5pm on Wednesday 10th November at 30 Millbank, London."

According to NUS figures, an estimated 52,000 people attended the national student demonstration in London. The mostly peaceful protests turned violent when a group of protestors stormed Millbank Tower, which houses the Conservative Party headquarters.

As Varsity reported yesterday, nearly 400 Cambridge students took part in the protest. Varsity has also obtained a first-hand account of a Cambridge student who was part of the crowd that stormed Millbank Tower.
