Rob Taylor at Corpus ChristiGabrielle Watts

This week I spoke to Rob Taylor, Head Porter of Corpus Christi College. Sitting in Rob’s office, he nodded at the absent-minded doodles I, like any sane adult, had drawn on my hand. One was the ‘peace’ sign I’d grown up with in its appropriated, commercial form. Taylor just raised an eyebrow and said, “is that Mercedes or ‘Ban the Bomb’?”

Rob Taylor chose ‘It’s Getting Better’ by Cass Elliott (affectionately known as Mama Cass) as the track of his years – recalling that he had just returned to England from the Far East when it was released and it was the year in which he met his wife. For Rob, it really seemed to sum up the times as they were then: “see this is how it happens, it grows, it’s not all at once, and that was how we were thinking.”

Before returning to the UK, Rob spent time in the Far East. “I was based out of Singapore with the Fleet Air Arm, 854 squadron attached to HMS Bulwark, a commando carrier at that time.” It was when he was on leave that Rob met his wife on a blind date arranged by his friend. We have been together some forty-four years now.”

For Rob, music is a big part of his life and his tastes are broad. “I always enjoyed it more than my wife," he says, "but we have always shared certain songs that hold fond memories. I can't say I enjoy a lot of the modern stuff they play at the gym though!”

Rob has been Head Porter at Corpus for a little over ten years and he knows how difficult the transition can be for new students. “The best advice for freshers I think would be to stay calm and remain focused; the worst period is always between the start and Christmas. Once that's behind you, things settle down and you get to know exactly what's expected. It’s a great time – it’s just knowing how to strike that balance.”

As with my first interview, I have to ask Rob for his favourite breakfast. “My favourite breakfast on a Sunday must be one of my wife's cooked breakfasts: which is egg, bacon & the works - but not all fried, some grilled.”

As ever, you can catch the coming week’s Porter’s Choice live on Cam FM at 97.2FM at 10am on a Saturday morning.
