The Conservative vote in Cambridge risks reaching an all-time low after Dani Harmer – aka Tracy Beaker – sent a strong message to the party at last night’s Glitterbomb.

The star was visiting as a DJ at Cambridge’s most popular LGBT+ club night and was filmed by a student shouting: “BOG OFF TORIES!”

The post has been enthusiastically shared by students, including the Cambridge University Labour Club (CULC), with the caption: “With a smile upon my face, I can see a better place, Doesn't matter what they call my name, Believe me now, I will win some day. ~ Daniel Zeichner, c.2019” (true fans will recognise the Tracy Beaker theme tune).

At the time of writing, the original tweet has over 40,000 likes and more than 10,000 retweets – politicians should take note of the potential of this kind of content as a campaigning strategy for the upcoming General Election.

Just earlier this year millenials and members of Gen Z greeted Attenborough as a national hero at Glastonbury. With such a powerful message Harmer could be next: there is no telling how large an impact Tracy Beaker may have.

When asked to respond to the clip one student asserted: “I’ve been undecided over who to vote for for some time but after seeing that I at least know I couldn’t possibly vote Tory”.

Another student declared that she is sure Harmer’s message will make all the difference: “I mean it’s Tracy Beaker, she knows what’s up”.

"This could represent a major setback for the Conservatives"

In times of such political uncertainty, it is no wonder that viewers of the clip may be swayed – many are simply looking for public figures they can trust and it seems Harmer may be one of them.

When life imitates Brexit

And with election campaigning kicking off across the country, this could represent a major setback for the Conservatives as they attempt to win votes from the student population.

Boris Johnson has yet to respond to this rousing call to action, although the Lib Dems will no doubt be co-opting 'Bog Off Brexit' as their latest attempt at relate to the 18-25 demographic, while avoiding promising concessions on tuition fees.

Only time will tell the significance of this moment, but future generations of Cambridge politics students can look forward to writing extensively on the topic, taking the form of an all-nighter with “Bog off Tories” playing on repeat. Tracy Beaker for Prime Minister, anyone?
