Pass the puck: Cambridge's Oscar Wilsby in actionJeff Torosian

The Cambridge Blues Men’s Ice Hockey team looked to continue their winning streak when they ventured to Oxford on Saturday 22nd November to take on the Oxford University Blues in a rematch of their game a fortnight earlier.  Cambridge had won the opening game decisively, but knew better than to underestimate Oxford, especially when the latter is on home ice.

Oxford had added more players and a very talented new goaltender to their lineup, but Cambridge was determined to return home with a second win in a row.

It took just over five minutes for BUIHA leading scorer Christopher Finch to open the scoring for the Light Blues while shorthanded thanks to a brilliant breakaway pass from line mate Julien Gagnon.

Cambridge would up their lead to three when Swedish star Oscar Wilsby set up one goal for Kum Nathan before potting one of his own by ripping a slapshot past the Oxford goalie’s pad.

The Dark Blues were not about to throw in the towel so early, and sure enough, they found their way onto the scoreboard to bring the tally to 3–1 in Cambridge's favour.

Twelve seconds later, however, Finch got his second of the game by shoveling in a backhand on the line following a well-orchestrated play from Dr Marty and defensive tower Alan Bauer.

Unwilling to let up, Cambridge continued to press and were able to notch one more strike before the first period expired.  Wilsby again glided through the Oxford defence and flipped a shot in the top corner to increase the lead to 5–1.

The pace of the game eased in the second frame and Julien Gagnon joined in on the action by tipping in a well-aimed shot by Wilsby.

The Cambridge offence wore down the Dark Blue defenders and the Light Blues finally got one more marker at the end of the period.  Gil-Arnaud Coche drilled a shot home fed in by Wilsby, as Cambridge jumped ahead to 7–1 after 40 minutes of play.

Period three was all Cambridge as the Light Blues kept shots to the outside, which goalkeeper Romain Tourenne easily turned away.

The men in Light Blue managed to add two more goals in the third.  Assistant captain Finch completed his hat-trick after stripping the Oxford defenseman of the puck and powering it past the stunned Oxford goalkeeper.

Finch then set up line-mate Gagnon on a breakaway for the last score of the night to push the final score up to 9–1.

In what was a resounding victory, Cambridge saw excellent performances from goaltender Romain Tourenne, the clinical Christopher Finch, who netted a three times and Julien Gagnon, who grabbed a couple of his own. The Player of the Match award however went to captain Jaason Geerts, with the Team-Selected Player of the Game going to Oscar Wilsby for his superb display consisting of two goals and three assists. Credit must also be given to the Oxford Captain, Naeem Bardai, who chose to play despite suffering from a sprained ankle.

The result secured Cambridge's third win of the season. Next up for the Light Blues was a return trip to Oxford the following week where they faced defending Varsity champions, the Oxford Blues, on Saturday 29th November.
