Protests against Michael Gove as occupation reaches its third day
Michael Gove’s talk at the Law Faculty avoids the disruption that fellow Conservative David Willetts faced on Tuesday.
As the occupation of Lady Mitchell Hall moves into its third day, a group of protestors gathered outside the Law Faculty to protest against the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove.
Gove gave a talk at the faculty as part of a public lecture series where he spoke about ‘The Meaning of Liberal Learning’.
There were fears of a repeat of what happened on Tuesday at the David Willetts’ talk, but the protest passed peacefully.
The group assembled outside the entrance of the Law Faculty at 5.30pm and proceeded to march down Sidgwick to West Road, before later returning to the entrance.
Justin, a PhD student, told Varsity: “I think that the fight has only just begun, and that’s why I’m here, just as I was last year, because now that the fees have been put in place, now that the cuts are going through, that’s when the real fight begins.”
As well as the protest, members of the occupation plan to attend and show support for an event held by Cambridge lecturers tonight at Sidney Sussex entitled, ‘Why We’re Striking: Cambridge Lecturers Speak Out’.
