If you've ever wanted to get involved with Varsity but never quite fancied editing, this could be the time for you. We're looking for:

  • Columnists
  • Radio editors and/or presenters
  • News correspondents
  • Violet news correspondent and features writer
  • Sport reporters
  • Video journalists
  • Staff Theatre Reviewers

Please see below for descriptions of each role, and what is required for an application. For all, please send your application to applications@varsity.co.uk by 6pm, Friday 7th April.

Columnists

There's room for real creativity here. We're not looking for any specific columns in a specific section, so if you think you've got something interesting to say (consistently) then pitch it to us! We're looking for someone with an original voice, a different perspective on life, or a keen interest they want to share with the rest of the world...

If you're wanting inspiration, here are three columns we had in Lent term:

If you'd like to be a columnist, send us:

  • A pitch (maximum 250 words)
  • A sample column (maximum 600 words)
  • Four ideas for further articles in your column

Radio editor/presenters

Varsity currently has two radio shows on CamFM. The Sunday Review covers politics and current affairs, and includes a mixture of live discussions and pre-recorded interviews. Our other show is The Vulture Show, which covers all things cultural in Cambridge, as well as material from the Vulture section of Varsity.

Our radio show presenters and editors should be aware of and look to continue the distinctive voice of each show, but also have ideas for how they can be developed. Although we're not 100% sure of the timings at this stage, an applicant for The Sunday Review should be free on a Sunday (surprise!) afternoon, and for The Vulture Show on a Thursday afternoon. Previous experience with radio is welcomed but not compulsory.

If you'd like to work on one of our shows, send us:

  • A bit about yourself, why you want the role, and any previous experience (maximum 500 words)
  • A critique of the show so far. Podcasts of the two shows are available on iTunes, just search for the title (maximum 500 words)

News correspondent

Have you always got your ear to the ground? Or maybe you're good at conveying complicated stories in a succinct manner? Those are just some of the skills we're looking for in our news correspondents!

Our news correspondents will work with Senior and Deputy News Editors to make sure that Varsity brings students the best stories, accurately and quickly. If you'd like to be one, send us:

  • Any previous experience, though this is definitely not compulsory (maximum 200 words)
  • Why you'd like the role (maximum 200 words)

Violet news correspondent

This is a similar role to the regular news correspondent, but suited to someone who who prefers the more light-hearted stuff! The Violet news correspondent will cover college news, and some of the stranger stuff that goes on around town. If you'd like to be one, send us:

  • Any previous experience, though this is definitely not compulsory (maximum 200 words)
  • Why you'd like the role (maximum 200 words)

Violet features writer

Our Violet features writer will contribute some of the more substantial pieces for our blog. Again there's scope for creativity here, but this is an example of the kind of stuff we'd like this writer to be contributing. If you think this is the role for you, send us:

  • A bit about yourself and why you want the role (maximum 200 words)
  • A sample piece (maximum 600 words)
  • Three ideas for further pieces

Sport reporters

Varsity prides itself on covering a broad range of Cambridge sport, so applicants should be equally prepared to write about rowing, basketball and Ultimate Frisbee. This is a fantastic opportunity for any sports fan to go to lots of matches and write about their favourite sports. If you'd like to apply, send us:

  • A bit about yourself and why you want the role (maximum 200 words)
  • A sample match report (maximum 600 words)

Video journalists

Varsity did some exciting stuff with video last term, and we most definitely want that to continue!  We'd like to incorparate video more into our Features section, and perhaps use it for some 'talking heads' Comment videos, but we're open to suggestions too. If you'd like to apply, send us:

  • A bit about yourself, why you want the role, and any relevant experience (maximum 500 words)
  • Three ideas for how Varsity could use video
  • A link to any previous work

Staff Theatre Reviewers

The theatre scene in Cambridge is thriving, and a large part of Varsity's role within the student community is reviewing the shows which are staged. We are looking for people who already know how to write a good theatre review, who have a passion for theatre and know what they like. If this is you, send us:

  • A bit about yourself and why you want the role (maximum 200 words)
  • A sample review (maximum 600 words)
