Social Consciousness with Style
Obakki’s autumn collection lends beguiling elegance to this week’s editorial.
This week, we sourced clothing from Obakki, a cool Canadian brand with an aesthetic that is simultaneously soigné and a tad louche. In Obakki’s fall collection, founder Treana Peake uses a dark palette of charcoal and black with hints of champagne, combined with the textures of Italian silk, translucent wool, and iridescent paillettes. We were excited to work with the company because of its dedication to ethical production and humanitarian causes. With this week's focus on poverty and homelessness in Cambridge, we thought it would be important to draw attention to a fashion project that has a social conscience. The Obakki Foundation works to improve the living standards and educational opportunities of children in Cameroon, with 100% of its proceeds going toward building schools and supplying basic necessities to orphanages. It has become a truism that the fashion industry and those involved in it are superficial and self-interested. With her passion for humanitarian work and her impeccable taste, however, Treana Peak is demonstrating that this doesn't always have to be the case.
