Victory for Cambridge’s men in Boat Race
After a near-dunking for the Cambridge women, the men defeated the old rivals

Cambridge's men have emerged victorious in this year's Boat Race, taking their first win over Oxford since 2012.
The Cambridge men had a good start to the race, drawing out an early lead against the less experienced Oxford crew. Cambridge had been tipped for victory by the pundits, with greater average height and total weight. The Cambridge crew also took an extra advantage from winning the toss and choosing the Surrey side; the better position given the choppy conditions on the river.
Around the ten minute mark, both crews began to be affected by the turbulent water, but Cambridge had already pulled out a lead of a length by that stage.
In the women's race, Oxford proved to be dominant after the Cambridge boat very nearly sank. As the water began to fill up the light blue boat, leaving Cambridge's cox nearly submerged, the race was red-flagged, handing victory to Oxford. As a result, Oxford has won back-to-back victories in the women's race since it was given equal billing to the men's race for the first time last year. Cambridge's women valiantly pushed on to the end, avoiding a dunking, but unable to deprive Oxford of a victory.
In the reserve races, Cambridge's women, in Blondie, defeated Oxford's Osiris crew, but Oxford's men managed to strike back by edging out their Cambridge counterparts in Goldie.
