Cambridge 41-8 Blackheath RFC

Tries: Abraham, Smith (2), Steele, Bain

Conversions: Tullie (4)

Penalties: Tullie

The crowd had barely taken their seats at a foggy Grange Road before Andrew Abraham scored within a minute of kick-off, catching the opposition short of numbers on the blind-side to go over in the corner. The advantage was doubled within 20 minutes as Will Smith, looking for work off his wing, took a short line off the fly half to score under the posts, the try converted by Seb Tullie.

Blackheath pulled 3 points back through a Steve McNamara penalty, before Abraham and Smith combined in superb fashion for the Blues' third try. Smith collected the fly half’s short, flat pass and broke the initial line of defence, subsequently leaving four challengers in his wake to surge through for his second try. Tullie added 3 more points to his tally on the stroke of half time, sending the Blues in at the break heavily in the ascendency, at 22-3.

The dominant Blues showed no signs of relenting in the second half: Number 8 Matt Steele charged thirty yards to score just before the hour mark, and Dugal Bain broke a tackle on the five-metre line, to take the margin to over 30 points. A try for Blackheath with the last play of the game was scant consolation after Cambridge were awarded a penalty try, the final score an overwhelming, but by no means flattering, 41-8

The Blues’ next game is against the traditionally strong Crawshay’s outfit on Wednesday 31st October. With the game against UWIC a week later cancelled, Cambridge will be keen to go into the two week break on the back of 3 consecutive victories before the visit of Saracens on 12th November.
