Charlotte Ivers has been elected President of the Cambridge Union Society
Charlotte Ivers has been elected President of the Cambridge Union Society for Easter Term, with a total of 517 votes.
Winning in a landslide, her rival, Sachin Parathalingam, received 304 votes.
Only 15 Union members voted in favour of nominations being re-opened.
62 per cent of Union members voted for Ivers, compared to 36 per cent for Parathalingam.
In an Facebook post after the result was announced, Ivers said: "So I won. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me."
"Sachin has been an excellent speakers officer and has given so much to the Union," she added. "I could not have wished for a more worthy opponent."
Parathalingam conceded defeat online shortly after the result emerged, adding: "Thank you to everyone who voted for me today. Unfortunately I did not get enough votes to win.
Congratulating Ivers on her victory, he also described how he has "had the best time being involved in the Union - meeting some of the most high profile speakers in the world and running some great events."
In the other results announced tonight, Kate Dunbar was elected Executive Officer, and Matteo Violet-Vianello was elected Speakers' Officer.
None of the candidates for any of the roles were beaten by the Re-open Nominations option.
