Four British tourists among those killed in a helicopter crash on a glacier in New Zealand have been named by police.

Andrew Virco and Katharine Walker, from Cambridge, and Nigel and Cynthia Charlton, from Romsey, Hampshire, were killed when the sightseeing helicopter they were travelling in hit a crevasse on a glacier on New Zealand's South Island on Saturday morning. The pilot and two Australian tourists were also killed.

The Fox Glacier, on the remote west coast of the South Island, is popular with tourists.

Walker was head of radiotherapy at Addenbrooke's. Cambridge Universities Hospitals said colleagues were "devastated" by the news of her death.

A hospital spokesman said: "Kath was a much respected member of staff who had worked at Addenbrooke's for 23 years.

"We know many of our staff are going to be hit hard by this tragic news and we will be offering additional support for them."

Neighbours have paid tribute to the couple, who lived in Trumpington.

Anne Cooke told Cambridge News that the couple were there to celebrate their fiftieth birthdays.

"It's awful," she said. "They were excellent neighbours and good friends. They were always willing to help."

Rescue co-ordinators said they found no sign of survivors at the crash site.

The craft came down in poor weather conditions, but the cause of the crash has not yet been established.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed that affected families were being offered consular assistance.
