Selwyn College forbids students to display postershttp://www.sel.cam.ac.uk/

In the days leading up to the general election, Selwyn College has sent emails to its students reminding them "that posters of any kind may not be displayed in room windows or anywhere else in College except on appropriate noticeboards and screens."

The student accommodation guide outlines the appropriate noticeboards on which posters can be displayed, but in the context of the General Election, concerns have been raised about the fact that most of the posters removed are those in support of political parties. There have also been ethical concerns regarding the way the college has implemented the policy, with some suggesting that staff have forced their way into rooms in order to remove the posters.

Kier Baker, Development and Education Officer at Selwyn College, wrote a response to the email, urging them to reconsider what he terms a "naive" decision.

He wrote in the email: "I accept that it is very unlikely one poster will change anything. I accept that the number of people that wish to display, and wish to see these posters, are in the minority."

"But the General Election that is coming up, no matter your political beliefs, is one that will no doubt irrevocably shape the country for decades: commentators from Owen Jones to Richard Littlejohn will back me up on that. I would submit that any medium which might encourage participation in it is a good thing that ought to not be suppressed.

"Alongside this, surely we have the right - without wishing to hark on too much about freedom of expression and democracy and all that - to stick up these things?"

Baker agreed to remove his posters, and the college has refused to back down on the issue.
