The UKIP leader will no longer give a talk in Cambridgeflickr: euro realist newsletter

Nigel Farage's talk in Cambridge, organised by the Department of Politics and International Studies, has unexpectedly been cancelled. The discussion, which was scheduled for Friday 17th October at 6pm at the Mill Lane Lecture rooms, will no longer take place according to the main organiser of the event, Professor Jonathan Haslam.

The CUSU Women’s Campaign had originally arranged a mass protest against the appearance of Nigel Farage, due to its position as the only CUSU 'liberation campaign' headed by a full time sabbatical officer. Similarly, non-student Cambridge residents have set up a Facebook event entitled "Tell Nigel Farage (UKIP) that he is NOT welcome in Cambridge!" Whether or not anti-UKIP protests will still take place remains unclear.

Today the Cambridge talks website was updated, listing Farage's talk as a "cancelled/deleted" event. The official Nigel Farage website does not mention the MEP’s visit to the university.

Jonathan Haslam, Professor of the History of International Relations, did not specify whether or not Farage would still be visiting Cambridge, despite the cancellation of his talk at POLIS. Farage had originally intended to dine in formal hall at Corpus Christi. The College has distanced itself from the controversial speaker with the following statement:

"The College is aware that Nigel Farage MEP is coming to Cambridge to give a talk in the University Lecture Rooms on Friday 17 October. A Corpus Fellow has invited him to dine in College afterwards. The invitation is a personal one and was not issued by the College."

Fawz Kazzazi, President of the Corpus Christi JCR for 2014-15, issued a warning to his fellow students stating that "For those of you that wish to take further independent action, we respect your right to do so. In doing so, however, please consider that actions could have negative academic and/or disciplinary repercussions."
