Seema Malik, a former PhD student at Magdalene College,  was arrested on Tuesday after breaching the restraining order lodged against her by a Cambridge professor of education.

Malik, aged 50, was initially arrested on Sunday, after going to the house the professor shares with his wife several times last weekend, demanding to see him. She had previously made unwanted calls, sending 20 emails and 20 voicemails to him back in September, as the prosecution established at the trial.

On the day of the trial Paul Brown for the prosecution told the Court how the woman had become “increasingly obsessed with him to the point it’s described as an unhealthy infatuation that she cannot control.”

The former student believed that she was married to the professor, who is a fellow at Homerton College. The Court heard how when contacting him, she told him “that she loved him, asking him for a relationship with him and telling him that she should be with him rather than with his wife”.

The couple called the police, which led to Malik’s arrest and subsequent conviction on Monday. She was handed a suspended sentence of one month in prison, subject to a restraining order that prevented her from contacting the professor and his wife, or going to their Grantchester home, Homerton College or the Faculty of Education.

Less than 24 hours after her conviction, Malik turned up to the Faculty of Education, asking to see the professor before she got on the plane home to India. She was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and later faced the magistrates, who sentenced her to two months in prison.
